I don’t know how to deal with Steve honestly. Things are getting out of control at every tutorial… It’s been almost a year this tutorial is on Patreon and I don’t have a lot of new things to post, so enjoy!

You may ask yourself why don’t I post often… Well! I got a job in a 2D animation studio (Loomi animation) as a background artist! The team is awesome and I love the projects. I basically draw all day, so I draw less as a hobby but still. (I might post some 3D animation too in the next months, we’ll see). Anyway prepare yourself because I feel like my artskills are improving a lot since I started at the studio ahah!

How do owl feet work.

Like... do you have diagrams and stuff,,, I'm super interested just in general about how owls manage to swoop down and grab prey in their claws so effectively

Human hands have smooth tendons that allow them to easily open and shut, which is good for doing dexterous tasks, but it means we have to expend energy to keep our fists closed if we hold on to something.

Owls and other raptors have tendons with ridges. This means their toes ratchet shut when closed and require energy use to open them again. All perching birds have this feature to an extent, shown here in red and blue.

This feature allows birds to lock onto a perch, and in the case of raptors, lock on to prey. In addition, their toes automatically close if the leg is compressed.

Raptors extend their legs to grab prey, and once they have it they generally pull it up towards themselves to lock their grip automatically.

They can of course still keep their talons closed when the leg extends if they choose to do so, they just can’t open them when their leg is completely pulled in towards the body due to their tendon structure.

I know this is probably a pretty basic tutorial, but it really is what jump-started my ability to draw kissing now. It took a long time, not gonna lie (roughly a year) and a lot of practice, but now I can draw people kissing literally no problem.
