Really REALLY need this team up to happen sometime in s3 now bls

i don’t wanna write a full length fic for my trollhunters varigo au but i do wanna write like, little snapshots of scenes in it but also i just want to rant about it

the idea is that it starts in canon time period. hugo is a troll, varian is a human. they meet when hugo stole something and got hurt and stuck out by quirin’s field and varian saves him before the sun is up. doesn’t mind that he’s weird bc varian is weird to so it’s all ok.

they form a friendship and then a romance, sneaking around at night together. hugo gets him into the current trollmarket but they get caught. however, varian says that if he’s allowed to stay there and study trolls, he could come up with a formula to allow them to walk in daylight so he stays but he’s on thin ice

then the current trollhunter dies and unfortunately, hugo is the next chosen one. because of varian. his connection to him has made him see value in the lives of both trolls and humans, making him a good hunter. varian is so upset because he’s seen what ‘destiny’ can do to people and is so frightened for hugo.

but he wants to help him if this is going to be their lives now. so he makes a formula allowing trolls to withstand sunlight for hours at a time. hugo becomes the first trollhunter to work during the day. the stones used before that only lasted for short bursts of time.

then of course bular shows up. varian and hugo are collecting ingredients for another batch of the formula. hugo saves varian from bular but gets caught in the sun as his last dose of the potion exists his system, turning him to stone

varian is utterly distraught but knows he has to leave before night falls again. Leaves trollmarket with his formula, never to be seen again

cut to present day, jim is learning about old trollhunters and comes across something about Hugo the Sunwalker (toby: way to ruin the alliteration there guys). The hunter who made a special potion ~all on his own~ that allowed trolls to walk in the sun. only to be seduced by a human working for bular and tricked out of his work, leaving trolls back in the dark.

the changelings are still after this formula and blinky thinks they might’ve found where it was hidden so jim has to get there first. some place called the ‘demanitus chamber’. says it’s guarded by a powerful spirit which jim is just like ‘great. get to fight a ghost. Love It Here (I hate it here)’

he gets there only to discover that oh, that’s not a ghost. That’s a real living guy. varian had made the elixir of life, letting him live for all these years and is like “hey idiot why would I write down this powerful formula that could help the gumgums take over? I keep it in my brain.” and he’s still pissed about hugo dying and the trolls twisting what happened to make him the bad guy and it’s up to jim to try to get this formula out of him by befriending him and helping him connect with people after so long

varian eventually opens up and since when a trollhunter dies, their soul goes into the amulet, he’s able to speak to hugo again and say his goodbyes through jim.

only bc i’m a sap, he doesn’t actually say goodbye, once varian is firmly on teem trollhunter, he’s allowed into the market again and goes to see hugo’s stone frozen body and he actually has a piece of hugo’s living stone (in the books, when trolls have kids they break off a small chunk of their stone and meld them together so i got an idea that hugo gives him a tiny piece of his stone-which is an emerald by the way he’s made up of emerald-as a proposal) and he puts it in the amulet and the magic of that brings hugo back to life yay happy ending

“don’t you want to be good, whumpee?” leader says, voice gentle. whumpee’s demeanour changes instantly, their shoulders going slack and all defiance leaving their body. they look up with wet eyes, tears clinging to their eyelashes as they nod.

“y-yes sir.”

“see? that wasn’t so hard, was it? now run along, your mission won’t wait for long.” whumpee nods once more and leaves, their legs barely holding them as their body is wracked with fear. leader simply grins as they watch; it was like a gift, what whumper did to whumpee, their conditioning was almost fun to manipulate.

Varian and Hugo like to bicker and play fight but listen once they get done with the trials and settle in Corona, Hugo is so spoiled

Anything he wants he gets. Any little trinket or bobble or outfit or tasty lil pastry. Varian just gets it no hesitation. They be walking around in the middle of a heated debate and Varian will see something catch Hugo’s eye and he’s just all “Let me explain to you exactly why you’re wrong…but do you see something you like? A little treat for my love?” While pulling out his coin purse

And it actually takes a lot of trust on Hugo’s part to let it happen; it’s a big adjustment. He grew up poor and on the streets, fighting to survive. And things were better with Donella but being a henchman still wasn’t the best life. Far from the luxury he wanted and now that he has that luxury is difficult to believe that he deserves it. That Varian isn’t just going to throw him out once he messes up one too many times.

But Varian of course would never. And Hugo has to trust that.

Varian is so gentle with him at times. “It’s ok, you can sleep in, nothing bad is going to happen if you do.” “You can take longer showers if you want, the waters not going to run out.” “You can eat more at dinner if you’re still hungry, the food’s not going to disappear, you know that right?”

One day Varian hugs him from behind and feels that his ribs aren’t sticking out anymore in an Almost Dangerously Unhealthy way and he just starts crying

Varian: oh you’re actually eating and sleeping enough. You’re healthy and not starving and it’s because you let me take care of you because you trust me and oh my good you love me-

Hugo: Vare, love, babe, I know you’re having a tender domestic moment but I’m still pretty scrawny which means you are CURRENTLY CRUSHING ALL OF MY ORGANS LET GO! (Affectionate)
