A baby, the cutest dog, and a happy fam. What more could you ask for?! 😭 There are simply not enough words to describe how precious this is, and how happy it made me. I love how Bee Bee immediately fell in love with the new baby!!! And how Poe would gladly let his child replace him. ❤️

15. Character introduces their baby to their pets

“Careful, careful.”

“I’m not fragile, Poe.”

Poe held your hand and kept his other on your back anyway as he helped you step into the house — he already helped you up the steps, and that was nice, but you were fairly certain you could handle crossing a threshold. “You pushed a baby out of your vagina barely two days ago. You should be pampered for the next six months.”

“I can accept that.” You stopped inside the foyer to watch Poe very carefully as he picked the car seat up from where he’d placed it on the landing, making sure the sleeping bundle inside it stayed safe. “Don’t swing it too much.”

“I know, sweetheart. I’ve got her.” He walked by you and into the living room, setting the car seat on the couch. “Bee Bee!”

His booming yell caused the baby to squirm and you to grab onto his arm tightly, both of you staring into the seat in fear. You relaxed considerably when the baby settled down and fell back asleep.

There was a thump from somewhere in the house followed by scrabbling nails on the hardwood floor before a tan and white dog came into the room, running straight for Poe.

“Hey, buddy!” Poe dropped to his knees, petting the dog behind the ears and then scratching his belly as he rolled over. “How’s my best boy? Huh? Did Uncle Finn take good care of you?”

Bee Bee enjoyed Poe’s attention for a couple moments longer, then hopped up and ran to you. When you didn’t crouch down like normal to greet him, he jumped at your legs.

“Careful with mama, she just pushed a seven pound human out of her vagina.”

“Can we stop talking about my vagina, please?” You were just bending over as best as you could to pet him, but he dropped onto all fours and started sniffing the air, following his nose to the couch.

Poe chuckled when the dog looked back at him. “Go ahead.” He got a fairly apprehensive look. “You can trust me, buddy.”

Bee Bee put his front paws up on the couch and nearly strained to get his head as far as it could go into the seat, sniffing hard. He seemed to catch just the right scent because he started wagging so hard that his butt was wiggling.

“That’s your sister. You wanna meet her?” Poe looked at you for permission, then shooed Bee Bee aside to undo the straps of the car seat. The entirety of the baby could fit in his hand, but he cautiously used one to cradle her body and the other to support her head.

Bee Bee was up and on the sofa the moment Poe sat down. He practically climbed into his lap, with his nose twitching as he sniffed the baby wildly.

His tongue poked out to lick her and Poe quickly drew her away. “Not the face, Beebs! Here.” He pulled off a tiny sock — it was loose because her feet were even tinier — and turned so Bee Bee could reach her feet. He immediately licked at her toes, jumping back and tilting his head when she kicked at him, making Poe laugh loudly. “Yeah, she did that to me from inside your mama every day for, like, four months.”

And he loved it every single time.

Bee Bee didn’t seem to mind either; he rested his head on Poe’s thigh and stared up at the baby, hardly blinking.

Poe grinned at them with complete adoration. “I think he approves.” That smile fell the moment he looked up at you to see tears steadily streaming down your cheeks. “What’s wrong? Do you need more pain meds? I think the ibuprofen’s in the car—”

“Nothing’s wrong.” Your shaky breath and soft sob had him looking worried and unconvinced. “I have all the hor—hormones and I’m just so happy.”

“This is happy? Come on, you’re gonna make me cry.”

You nodded, walking over and stroking his hair. “My little family.”

“Our little family.”

“Our little family.”

The sweet moment was broken as the baby started fussing and quickly transitioned into crying at the top of her lungs.

“I should probably try feeding her.” You carefully took the baby from him, crossing the room and sitting in a chair.

Bee Bee followed you and sat, watching you until you got settled before he laid at your feet the entire time you fed her.

Poe watched with love in his eyes, full of joy even though he was pretty sure his best buddy had just replaced him.
