i’m fucking dying at the idea that like. hen or smth in 8x01 asks buck how its going with tommy and him just nonchalantly saying “oh we broke up” or “tragic helicopter accident :(“ like— what. there’d be riots in the streets. imagine someone binging 9-1-1, watching 7x10 and seeing bucktommy in such a good position relationship wise with a whole ass storyline being set up to include tommy (gerrard returning to the 118) and then going to season 8 and tommy’s just. gone. “why???” indeed.

the thing is imagine retconning another one of buck’s love interests the second time in a row and this time everyone knows this guy and likes him. he isn’t completely new or a rando, he’s been friends with hen and chim since post-gerrard 118. bobby was his boss for at least a couple years (?) he befriended eddie before dating buck, eddie and maddie both encouraged buck to ask tommy for another chance, maddie wanted to meet him and he was included in the wedding. it’s implied he probably at least spoke to buck’s parents/introduced himself to them. bobby said he’s good people and he’s good for buck. like they intertwined him so well and retconning that feels like it’d be the biggest “why???”

"i kinda can't stop thinking about him" but from tommy's perspective. this funny, sweet, gorgeous guy is interested in him and for the first time in a long, long time tommy is excited about his love life. during the date he can roll with evan's obvious nerves, and then with the revelation that he's new to his own queerness. but then it tips a little too far and so tommy gives him the out. between ending their date early and being asked for coffee, tommy can't stop thinking about evan, try as he might not to, and he just feels sad. not even disappointed, really, because he remembers what it's like to be in evan's shoes. he just keeps thinking about the dazed wonder on evan's face after he kissed him, and he thinks maybe if we'd met a few years from now, instead.

Actually I’m gonna double down on Buck’s parents being not only not homophobic but vocal allies. I’m gonna say Buck’s dad sponsored the GSA at the school where he worked since the 90s, and Phil and Marge deliberately normalized lgbtq+ stuff when raising their children. And I’m gonna say that makes much more sense with Buck’s “I’m an ally, looking upon other men with a lustful gaze is perfectly normal 😊” blitheness. If he had been raised in a homophobic household he likely would have noticed his occasional gay thoughts because they would have probably scared him. But instead he’s only briefly tripped up by having to recontextualize these things in relation to being part of the community, instead of simply supporting the community.

In conclusion, Phil and Marge were still bad parents, but Buck coming out as bi is probably fine with them, and they possibly even approve of it more than anything else he’s ever done. And they’re trying to be better, so it would be funny if they’re actually overtly welcoming to Tommy and Buck’s like “damn all I had to do was kiss boys?”

Saw a gifset that included Marge and Phil greeting Tommy in Chims hospital room again, and I know I've already explored this in a fic but I don't know which option is funnier:

1. Buck gave his parents a heads up that his date to the wedding was a man and then didn't give them anything else. Just "Hey my date Tommy is gonna be at the 118 table for the reception, Maddie and I already updated the seating chart, love you guys bye": so Marge's glance at Phil boils down to "I thought he was joking but that man just ate our son's face, likely somewhere in this hospital." and Phil is sizing up the guy as Buck slips past with barely any acknowledgement on his way to introduce Maddie and Tommy. Phil is intimidated and aroused.

2. They have no clue who Tommy is, they have just watched their daughter get married in a hospital room and now their son is carting a dirty sweaty man straight past them up to his brother-in-law's bed, and it is very fucking clear they've been making out somewhere in this hospital. He says "Look who showed up." like this man was expected by the room at large, and he will not let go of the man's hand, he is smiling and giddy and his face is covered in soot and Tommy makes eye contact with them as he passes and maybe just nods his head because he knows most of the people in the room at least in passing so he can make a guess as to who these two are. And Marge looks to Phil like "Did you KNOW about this?!¿" and Phil is too busy being fucking impressed by the size of the beefcake his son is dragging along by three fingers to notice his wife trying to have a homophobic moment with him.

Either way, the look Phil is giving Tommy reads to me as confused and impressed. Like. He's Looking Disrespectfully at his son's boyfriend in that moment. He does not understand but he's secretly high fiving his genes for bagging that man.
