I have a lot to learn about disability advocacy, but I’m very eager and willing to do so. Will probably be reblogging a decent chunk of resources and stuff as I come across it.

A painting of many disabled people of all gender identities, body types, and races. In the center is text that says 'Disabled people are experts of their own lives and know what they need.'
A disabled person with one arm and dark skin, looking gorgeous, inspired by nadina laspina, with text that says: 'Disabled people's lives are not tragedies.'
A disabled person with dark skin in a wheelchair with a speech bubble that says: 'No marriage equality until people with disabilities can marry without losing benefits.'
A chameleon with text that says 'Not all pain is visible.'
Three disabled people of different races, gender identities, and body types. One has a prosthetic leg. One has an amputated arm. One is in a wheelchair. Text says: 'People with disabilities have a right to make their own decisions about their bodies and lives.'
A disabled person with lighter skin next to a service dog. The person's dress says: 'If your activism isn't accessible who is it even for?'
A wheelchair-user with dark skin, looking exasperated, with a speech bubble that says, 'I'm not interested in your unsolicited medical advice.'

Since July is Disability Pride Month

(as opposed to every other month when we're all demure about disability rights /gentle sarcasm)

I wanted to highlight one of my favorite artists: Liberal Jane.

There’s a couple of things here that I’ve been trying to get better at, and in the current world we inhabit become more and more important. You get better as an artist by being inspired by others, but I also believe you get better by teaching and sharing and communicating how and why your art is how it is. We as artists are part of a chain of legacies all the way back to cave paintings, and it’s why I think engaging in community is truly the best you can do. (It’s also why I hate AI but that’s a different conversation). And by that same token, yeah. I understand the instinct of bragging about working nonstop for 18 hours, pulling 3 all nighters in a week and all that. Capitalism wants you to break yourself down for someone else. I do work in poor ways, excessive ways that I hate and that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I’m constantly failing at improving my work-life balance, but I’m not gonna stop trying and neither should you. Art should never come at the expense of you as a person. PS: I know there are art pieces where pain and suffering are vital to the message of the piece, but those are very specific exceptions, and the fact that they need to exist is a condemnation of the world, and not the artist.

this is essentually a ramble about ~ making art~

🌈✨

I think it's important to say that art is a combination of what you experience, good and bad, what you do and don't know and obviously what you do and don't like!

Everyone's experience and journey is different, we all admire different things and put that into our art. I think it's VERY important to keep exploring and trying new things, but also I believe it's fine to have set ideas and goals to keep you on track (esp speaking as a neurodivergent artist).

My neutral stance with tracing and referencing is don't get caught up in only a few artists to admire forever, start small and learn from inspirations, credit whom they are and talk about why you like their art! Break their art down to simple shapes and also read about the person too to learn some personal insight to their art, people are always more than just what they draw!

I find that to be a baseline respect for people you're inspired by, credit them!! Esp if they are your friends, please DO NOT trace your friends and say nothing, if you love a friends art to want to LEARN from them, ask them before you trace their art!!😭

You exist in this world surrounded by things and put that into art you make; I think to be open about the things you want for your art IS part of the process? I'm still learning and there is so many areas I want to explore I haven't yet!

Mediums, art history movements, the social side of how public responds and respects art I find all facinating and am more aware when I make my art now than when I was younger just stepping out of a sheltered, controlling enviorment that forbid "the secular world" ...so art to me is a never ending learning experience, and at the same time I think more talk about *why* we do things is very important!!

I believe mental health plays a HUGE part for some, me included. I can't draw on days I do not feel good, art doesn't become healing then it becomes a chore. To take breaks away from art IS GOOD!! To also work out the body, keep your arms strong!!!! STOP STAYING UP INTO THE WEE HOURS OF THE MORNING WHEN YOU HAVE A DAY JOB PLEASE!! Plllllease stop bragging you got a comic page done when you have work in 2 hours??😭😭 Stretch your wrists, neck, back, ect!!

I also know that when someone tells you to do something you feel a twinge of "well now I wont!!" Please recognize those habits! I might just make a seperate post talking about my autistic/ADHD struggle experience with art bc I find that truly plays a huge impact into art at times, esp getting to know your habits and personal taste better.

okay I will stop LMAO🙈💦

Keep art fun!!!!

A doodle of a girl named Renata from the game Frogun. She's using her frogun to grapple on to a fly whilst power walking forward to collect some fly coins...

Frogun was my favorite indie game last year!
