I hate being in tech and needing to get into a damn argument in defense of artists because some idiot sitting 4 rows ahead of me things AI is a good replacement for people. I HATE IT.

How many times does someone need to say that AI in any form of art is wrong? There's so many better applications for it?? I'm in the damn field, I see the things it could do. Yes, it can take a prompt and write you a lil piece. Whatever you asl, I'm sure ChatGPT could write SOMETHING. Will it be satisfactory? NO! Because as good as Language Models are, they're not perfect. Even given all the information to learn they can't make the connections between two distant things and create poetry or real art.

Even that art piece that won the award about 2 years ago now (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/02/technology/ai-artificial-intelligence-artists.html if you want to read more, though you probably already know about it) isn't even that good? Yeah - it's pretty. If a human made it, I'd think it was even cooler because damn you drew all those details? Chill. But there's no meaning behind it. Even if a person made it I'd ask 'hey what's the theme supposed to be? I can acknowledge the creativity behind the feeding of ideas into the robot, but even so it's not good? It's pretty at best my guy, good job. Moving on?

When you try to maximize efficiency in things like art, you lose the very foundation of what it means to make art. And then it's like why. It makes me want to scream.

I had to write an essay using Chat GPT for a class - that was the whole damn assignment and the entire time I was sitting there trying not to cry because of how BAD the responses were. I would NEVER submit an essay like this - it's shit. Rereading the essay made me want to cry because of the like of style: people aren't kidding when they say you can tell when things are made of AI.

This doesn't even cover the unethical bullshit that comes with the building of a language model. (My proposed solution to this though is regulations that involve companies needing to track every piece used within the dataset used to build a model, and needing to compensate artists every time the AI is used. That way it's more expensive to keep the AI model running instead of just hiring an artist. Look at that, the reason to use AI removed ~. Goddamn money is stupid.)

Anyway yeah. Anger. Rage. Defense of the artist and whatnot.

Anger rant appreciated. I was saving this for a day when my rage for AI was refueled by something. Today is the day. A girl came up on my fyp on Tiktok saying that she got expelled from uni because she used ChatGPT to write a semester assignment..........and was sad about it.

Man, what did you expect? As if this isn't downright plagiarism, and even worse because you didn't even scour the internet to find the sources yourself? Universities are not mandatory education, if you don't want or know how to write your assignment, why are you fucking here?

Anyways, ehem. I'm just accepting that not everyone in the world is of average intelligence (corporates who don't understand the value of art and the long-term consequences of replacing artists included) and that's okay. Smack them overhead with a book on the ethics of technological advancements. If not a change of heart, this might achieve some spiritual peace. For you, the book-holder.
