I could go on a whole rant about how absolutely bonkers it is that The Boy tries to frame Brahms as the villain. His parents are completely at fault for everything and in this essay i’ll explain why (Ignoring the boy two because i want to).

Something else I would like to point out before I start is it is incredibly evident Brahms deals with Age Regression. It’s not even an argument at this point. He baby talks, is physically aggressive and often throws temper tantrums. While this is contributed to by his awful upbringing as i’ll mention as i go, this is a coping mechanism for trauma, stress, severe illness or mental health disorders. It is painfully obvious Brahms did not receive the help he should’ve gotten when whatever happened with Emily happened. He was a child and should have gotten help, therapy, SOMETHING to cope with that traumatic experience, whether it be an outburst led to her demise or he was completely separated from it.

LISTEN, WHETHER OR NOT HE ACTUALLY KILLED EMILY IS DEBATABLE. CHILDREN CANNOT REGULATE THEIR EMOTIONS, ESPECIALLY IF HE’S BEEN ISOLATED LIKE WHAT IT SEEMS. FROM WHAT WE SEE IN THE MOVIE, TANTRUMS AND VIOLENT OUTBURSTS ARE NORMAL FOR HIS PARENTS. THEY ALLOW HIM TO TAKE OUT HIS ANGER ON SOMETHING OR SOMEONE AND THERE BE NO CONSEQUENCES.

AFTER EMILY DIES, HIS PARENTS LOCK HIM AWAY, BUT HERES WHERE I ARGUE ABOUT THE FIRE TO FAKE HIS DEATH.

HOW WOULD HE HAVE GOTTEN THE BURNS IF IT WAS ON PURPOSE? IF HIS PARENTS SIMPLY MEANT FOR IT TO BE AN OUT, THEY SURELY WOULDNT HAVE LET THEIR SON NEAR THE FIRE. SO WHY WAS HE BURNED?

In my own personal fantasy, i think his parents tried to lock him in and let him die. Obviously being a rich family had to be a big deal, especially if their son was already a laughing stock for being “odd”. They had done something wrong in their parenting for Brahms to believe his actions don’t have consequences and tantrums are obviously a regular thing, so taking his anger out on something or someone isn’t a shock either. His parents knew. So they tried to pretend it didn’t happen. They wanted the sob story of their son dying in a horrible fire than the constant reminder that they failed as parents and had a murderer for a son.

Then let’s talk about how they locked him away in that house for twenty years pretending that he didn’t exist. Acting as though a doll was him. I think they also gave him the mask to match the doll so they wouldn’t have to be reminded of their failed attempt by his burn scars.

They locked that poor boy away since he was EIGHT YEARS OLD. He had NO human interaction outside from his mother and father, who as I’ve just said, aren’t exactly the best people to learn about life from.

He had one bad interaction with someone and was completely isolated. If solitary cells drive someone insane, what do you think that level of abandonment did to Brahms? Especially at the age he was? From the movie we know that his parents turned to the doll for comfort quickly after his death as they specify it was 20 years that they’d been like this. Imagine the mental anguish of a little boy who’s own parents chose an object over him to love and care for. Even worse that they pretended it was him as though they’d truly lost him.

Now let’s talk about how his parents decided, midway through their already well established life that they didn’t want to do it anymore. The guilt got the better of them, whatever. They dumped Brahms on some poor random girl who didn’t even know what was going on. They decided the guilt was too much and took the easy way out instead of actually doing what loving parents would do and getting help for their son, but instead they decide to drop him and go drown in the ocean.

They also encourage his delusions of love for Greta, saying things like “the girl is yours” and treating her like she was some object they could just give. They obviously didn’t teach him that just because he wants something, doesn’t mean he’ll get it. They failed Brahms. Both as parents and just plain old human beings.

Now, Brahms obviously has no idea how to interact with people other than a child does, which is to play. He is playful. He steals Greta’s shoes, he moves things and takes her clothes, though the clothes for a more adult reason. But he doesn’t know that’s wrong or inappropriate.

So, when Cole comes to the house, Greta begs Brahms to help her. Brahms, being obsessed with her, does exactly that.

He scares Cole. He doesn’t hurt him, he just tries to scare him away.

Brahms could quietly go into the Billard room and suffocate Cole or something if he wanted to.

But he didn’t. He tried to scare him away.

Then, Cole begins to get violent with Malcolm and Greta. The line is crossed when he shatters the doll.

I would argue Brahms, in his own mind, is well within his rights to attack Cole.

Cole had thrown Greta and Brahms had no doubt heard the things Greta said about her past with him. Cole had screamed and yelled and shattered his doll.

As we’ve said before, Brahms obviously has anger issues. So someone destroying his doll after being generally awful probably didn’t go over so well and we know it didn’t because he attacks Cole.

I am autistic and 100% understand the way emotions can seem so big and overwhelming for small things like this doll. I can empathize/sympathize with that, doesn’t make it right but i understand.

Brahms kills Cole and goes to grab Greta. Again whether it’s to subdue her so she’ll stop hitting him or for other reasons isn’t really known. Malcolm (i believe) hits Brahms and gets greta away from him.

The chase through the house ensues.

I will admit, this bit is hard to really break down apart from just being a scary chase scene in a horror movie. Brahms was upset and angry and he didn’t want Greta to leave, so he chased her.

Another thing I will note is when Brahms catches Malcolm, he doesn’t kill him. He knocks him out rather violently, but doesn’t kill him. He instead turns his attention to Greta and chases/begs her not to leave.

Again, he was never taught that he couldn’t always get his way, so he’s infuriated when she runs.

But when she comes back, he isn’t violent. He simply listens to her. He simply wanted someone to care for him like his parents never did and Greta was doing that.

Then, the kiss.

Brahms is getting what he wants, being obedient. Greta kisses him and they start making out then she stabs him with the screwdriver.

What a backstab?

He attacks her (again with the anger issues and tantrums) and she stabs him a few more times until he drops and she escapes.

one thing to take away is that Brahms is a victim here too. Another thing to take away is i’m a brahms dick rider so this is all just me trying to justify wanting to bang big stinky wall man.

TL;DR - BRAHMS IS MENTALLY ILL AND DESERVED HELP, HIS PARENTS WERE HORRIBLE, WHY COULDNT IT HAVE BEEN ME INSTEAD OF GRETA 😔
