rowaelin // 1,792 words.
based on the prompts: ‘a phone password, a hoodie sleeve soaked in tears, a rumor.’ AND a variation of "This is all my fault. I should have seen this coming. We never would have worked. I should have left as soon as it started" “As soon as what started?” “As soon as I started falling in love with you.”
A/N: i don’t love the ending of this but i wanted to post it before i went to work today so i wrapped it up really quick. obviously this could have a part two so let me know if you’d like to see that, or also if you want to see a peak into their summer together. i’ll add tags later.
Aelin’s hands had been shaking for the better part of the last thirty minutes. It had started as a slight trembling in her pinky until it was so bad that her thumbs had knocked together recklessly while she tried to type in the password on her phone. Every time she exhaled it was heavy, her cheeks puffing out ever so slightly as she tried to talk some sense into herself. Sense that told her everything was fine, none of this was true, and everything would be back to normal soon.
But she knew that wasn’t the case.
Ever since Nehemia had called her a little over half an hour ago, it had felt like her entire world stopped spinning on its axis. Gravity wasn’t holding her feet to the floor anymore. She was pretty sure she was having an out of body experience because it felt like she was looking at everything from far away. The only sounds she could hear were her shaky inhales and the crackle of snot in her nose every time she tried to breathe. The sleeve of her green sweatshirt was darkened in multiple places where she’d absently wiped at her nose or used it to soak up an abundance of tears that wouldn’t stop trickling down her cheeks. She did it again, hating that the stupid hoodie she wore and savored so much smelled like Rowan, like home.
Worst of all she hated that she couldn’t put her own feelings aside for a few minutes to check on Rowan and see if he was okay, or even bring herself to ask him if the rumors were true. She knew, of course, what people said about assumptions: they make an absolute ass out of everyone. But whenever she opened their string of texts she couldn’t get herself to see if he could call her, or even just type out a simple are you okay?
Technically speaking, she didn’t even have a right to be acting this way. They weren’t exclusive, not even close. They hadn’t even touched that topic with a ten foot pole when he’d gone back to Doranelle for the semester. Rowan had been home in Orynth for the summer, and their own friendship had turned into something… more. Something so intense that neither of them had seen it coming. It was a summer full of secret touches and sneaking off while camping with their friends to whisper words against each other’s skin in the dark. It was a summer of hooking up in cars, on the sandy beach of the lake, and in the basement of Aelin’s parents house while everyone was sleeping.
She had cried when he left to go back to school, and he had spent their last seconds together kissing tears from her cheeks. Aelin had tasted the saltiness from them on her lips when he’d bid her a final goodbye at the airport and left her standing on the curb by her car with it’s hazard lights blinking in the early hours of the morning. The hazard lights in the fog should have been her warning sign to stop, to turn back now while she could, to go back to being friends with Rowan while her heart could handle it.
But even if she’d done that then, it would still feel like this now. Aelin had sort-of tried to end things by telling Rowan he was off the hook, but he had shaken his head and promised they would figure things out despite the distance between them while she resumed her sophomore year of college at the University of Terrasen and he picked up his senior year at Doranelle State University in Wendlyn. An entire ocean between them that was full of the secrets of their summer. Secrets that neither of them had spilled to their friends because it felt too precious to talk about just yet.
Still, the fact remained that they weren’t exclusively seeing each other, and who knew if Rowan even wanted a relationship after he’d broken up with his girlfriend of two years just before the summer began. Aelin found herself blasting a mental reminder that it was probably just a summer fling to Rowan, even when he called her in the middle of the night his time because he couldn’t sleep and missed her. Even when he was already promising her he would be home for Yulemas. Or, when he was murmuring in the dark about what parts of her body he wanted to kiss, encouraging her to touch those places and imagine it was his lips dragging over her skin and not her own hands.
And then Nehemia had called and the world had stopped and she couldn’t breathe or think about anything but it all being bullshit. Not that Lyria being pregnant meant anything where Aelin and Rowan were concerned, but she knew Rowan like she knew the lines on the palm of her hand. She knew he would probably do the noble thing and be with her, stay with her, without him telling her so. Still, this was something she hadn’t anticipated hearing. The words had washed over her like someone had dumped a bucket of ice on her in the middle of winter in the Staghorns. At one point, she was crying so much that her teeth had chattered together while she threw what felt like the biggest pity party of the century. Aelin hadn’t been able to get off the phone with Nehemia fast enough, citing that she had to call Rowan, and ever since she had been staring at their chat bubble trying to find the words that failed her over and over again. Nehemia still didn’t know about the secret summer Aelin and Rowan had shared. No one did.
When her phone started to ring, it was a second wave of nausea, a second wave of ice that hit her with a ferocity she hadn’t expected. Rowan’s name and photograph flashing on her screen. Aelin stared and stared for so long that she almost missed the call, answering at the last second and hating how shaky her voice sounded when she said, “Hey.”
“Aelin.” Rowan sighed her name in relief, whispered it a second time like a prayer.
“I was getting ready to call you, I just… I talked to Nehemia.” She said it like it would explain everything, and when Rowan was silent for a moment she added, “She told me about Lyria.”
“I was hoping I would get to you first.” For someone who had just found out that his ex-girlfriend was pregnant, he sounded remarkably calm about everything. Maybe it was because he’d already made up his mind about what he was going to do and since Aelin already knew, then calling off whatever this was between them would be easier. Aelin made herself laugh a little, but the sound broke somewhere in the middle and a sob escaped her throat. “Baby,” he said softly, so tenderly that she could almost feel the caress he would have run down her cheek while pulling her closer to him.
“I’m not trying to make this about me. I swear I’m not.” The words were barely above a whisper as she tried and failed to speak loud enough. She sniffed, hating how disgusting it sounded in her ears.
“I know,” he assured her, voice still soft and sounded like he was on the verge of begging for forgiveness.
“Are you okay?”
“I don’t know, but I care more about you so I’d rather know what you’re thinking and feeling right now.” If she didn’t know any better she would think that was fear in his tone, wrapping around the words that came out a little too tight.
“I think that…” she paused, rubbing the heel of her hand into her eye until she saw stars, “I don’t know, Rowan. Maybe this was a bad idea.”
“What? What are you talking about?”
“I told you when you left that you were off the hook and didn’t owe me anything and I just think that whatever this is…” Words failed her, struggling through the thickness of her voice while she fought back tears. Part of her was still waiting for him to be the one to call things off, waiting for his explanation of why he couldn’t pursue any sort of relationship with her outside of friendship.
“Aelin.”
“We never would have really worked anyway, you know? I kind of feel like this is my fault for being so stupid and reckless this summer, and -”
“How is this your fault? Baby, what are you talking about?” Fabric shifted on his end of the phone, like he was sitting up now while he tried to decipher her words.
“You don’t need the complications and it’s fine because nobody even knows we… had a thing this summer. You’re off the hook, Ro. I know you. I know you’ll want to do the right thing.”
“A thing this summer? What do you think the right thing for me to do is, Aelin?” Now, there was an underlying frustration to his voice. Like he couldn’t believe what she was saying, what he was hearing. Frustration that he was clearly trying to control. There was more movement on his end of the line, and Aelin imagined him pacing in his living room, a hand raking through his silver hair. It was late in Doranelle and he was likely in his pajamas by now, bare feet padding over the carpet he was wearing down.
“I should have let you go as soon as it started,” was all she said, absently. Her tears had stopped for the moment while she drummed her fingers against the arm of the couch. It felt more like she was thinking out loud to herself than having a conversation with another person.
“You’re not making any sense, love. Talk to me.” The rawness in his voice almost broke her and drew hot tears down her face. She was quiet for a minute, trying to reign in her emotions, trying to calm herself down, but it was useless because there was no stopping it. “As soon as what started?”
“As soon as I started falling in love with you,” she whispered, her heart breaking into a thousand pieces over something she felt like could never be.
“Baby -” he started, but she hung up. It didn’t take long for him to call back, that picture of them by the lake in June illuminating her phone again. Her hands still shook as she rejected the call and turned her phone completely off, knowing he would probably keep calling until she answered otherwise.
And she didn’t know if she could stomach talking to him ever again.
