You take a deep breath, plastering on your best smile before you open the door. “Miss Y/n, I presume? We’re here for the inspection.”

A rather short woman eyes you up and down as she speaks, the pleasant smile on her face not fooling you for a second. You know it’s only present to make you feel comfortable – to make it more likely for you to slip up if there’s anything you’re hiding. You should know, you find yourself doing the same thing with your own clients often. A good lawyer never leaves room for surprises, at least not if you want to win your cases.

“That’s right, please come inside.” You step aside, gesturing for the woman and the man besides her to enter your home.

“The inspection is fairly simple, Miss Y/n. We will have to go through the house to make sure it’s appropriate for the hybrids and their needs, as well as talk with them to make sure they are doing all right. I’m sure you understand that you cannot be present as we interview them – we need the hybrids to be as honest as possible.”

There’s something about her tone that rubs you the wrong way, like she’s already expecting to find some incriminating once she begins her little check-up.

“Of course.” You give her a stiff nod, your smile feeling more like a grimace than anything else as you motion for the pair to follow you down the hallway.

You close the door behind you with a heavy sigh, your shoulders stiff and sore from being hunched over your desk all day.

You wince at way your neck pops as you shrug off your light coat; maybe you should treat yourself to a nice massage once this case is over. This is probably one of the hardest ones you’ve ever worked on, and the fact that you’re taking on a whole company definitely shows in the mountain of paperwork you still need to get through. What makes it so difficult is how thorough they’ve been in hiding the trails of their money laundering, and if it hadn’t been for the ex-employee that alerted the police about it, you’re positive no one would have ever found out.

You’re keeping the case on the down-low as requested by your boss, not really sharing any details with your co-workers. It isn’t lost on you just how shady the whole enterprise is, and you’re sure you’ll uncover more unsavoury things the deeper you dig. And so, keeping other people in the dark seems to be the best way to do things. While you trust the people in your office, you can never be too sure of who might let something important slip for some extra money. You’re sure Lim Enterprises wouldn’t mind coughing up some bills for any information that could turn the case in their favour. So for now, it’s just you.

You drop your heavy bag to the floor, not looking forward to spending all night pouring over the documents you brought home with you. But if you want to wrap up this case this year, you don’t really have much of a choice. You grumble a few curses under your breath, so caught up in your own thoughts that you don’t even notice the heavy footsteps echoing down the hallway until you feel a body barrelling straight into yours.

Your scream gets caught in your throat, the shock making you choke as you feel a pair of arms lock around your waist, gluing your arms to your side.

“We’re so sorry!” Taehyung whimpers, his breath fanning over your throat from where his face is tucked against your skin.

“Taehyung?” You breathe, all kinds of confused at the sudden outburst.

You breath hitches, and the soft intake of air doesn’t go unnoticed as seven pairs of ears twitch in response.

The blanket around your shoulders starts to slip but Namjoon hastily reaches out to tug it back up, gentle fingers brushing against yours before he drops them back down to his sides. Namjoon’s silver hair grazes his long eyelashes as he looks down at you, the contrast making his eyes seem deeper – warmer. There’s something you can only describe as determination in the wolf hybrid’s eyes as he scans you up and down to make sure you’re alright, and it makes your heart skip a beat.

”Yours?” You echo.

Namjoon’s intense gaze suddenly falters, his eyes widening as they flicker over your shoulder.

You feel Seokjin’s hand tense where it’s resting on your lower back, the air in the room growing stiff as the other hybrids quickly advert their eyes, their cheeks tainted pink.

“Not like that!” Namjoon suddenly splutters, “I just meant that you’re our uhm, roommate? Yes, roommate.”

He winces as your lips part in surprise at his little outburst, his tail drooping between his legs as he lowers his gaze.

Right. Roommate.
