手/”hand” expressions

(hope you find these handy)

手が上がる・てがあがる to improve at something

手が空く・てがすく to have a hand free [i.e. to be available to do something]

手が込む・てがこむ to be intricate; to be something to keep one’s hands busy with [crafts, chores, intricate tasks, etc.]

手がかかる to be a handful; to require a lot of attention and care [as in a child]

手が出ない・てがでない to be impossible

手がふさがる to have one’s hands full with something [i.e. to be preoccupied/busy]

手が離れる・てがはなれる to distance onesself from something

手を拱く・てを(こまねく or こまぬく*)  to fold one’s arms  [i.e. to stand by and do nothing]

*I think both readings are interchangeable, but as always I defer to a native speaker.

Study finds metal from space junk polluting the upper atmosphere | CBC Radio

Scientists using high-flying aircraft to sample the upper atmosphere have found metal elements in aerosol particles they say are from thousands of rocket boosters and satellites that have re-entered from space. While rocket launches are increasing in frequency, the cumulative effect of this newly discovered form of pollution is u1 The Earth's atmosphere has been a dumping ground for derelict satellites, rocket boosters and even entire space stations since the beginning of the space age. According to data collected by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs the cumulative number of satellites launched into space since 1957 exceeds 14,000. When a satellite reaches the end of its design lifetime, it either falls out of orbit or is driven down into the atmosphere for disposal to prevent it from becoming a hazard in the near-Earth space environment.  The atmosphere is a convenient garbage disposal system because objects in orbit are traveling at roughly 30,000 km/h, so except for the largest and most robust pieces of them, they are incinerated when they hit the air. ... But the metals those objects are made of are vapourized, and researchers have found that they can remain in the atmosphere for some time.

PLASTIC POLLUTION PREVENTION INSTEAD PLASTIC REMOVAL, RESEARCHERS SAY

A new international research highlights that plastic removal technologies have shown varied efficiency in the amount of waste material they are able to collect, in fact, plastic removal technologies used so far have have not been tested at all. Some have been shown to harm quantities of marine organisms, including fish, crustaceans and seaweeds, that far exceed the amount of plastic captured, meaning their overall impact on the ocean is potentially more harmful than helpful.

Plastics accumulates in all environments, from the highest mountains to the deepest oceans, whoever, plastic production is projected to triple by 2060, with plastic pollution increasing correspondingly under business-as-usual scenarios.

According to researchers, plastic removal technologies can temporarily mitigate plastic accumulation at local scales, but evidence-based criteria are needed in policies to ensure that they are feasible and that ecological benefits outweigh the costs. To reduce plastic pollution efficiently and economically, policy should prioritize regulating and reducing upstream production rather than downstream pollution cleanup.

There are innovations for the open ocean and the seabed that use combinations of towed nets, autonomous vessels and artificial intelligence, but researchers say that even if these technologies were to show signs of being truly effective, they would barely scratch the surface of the global problem. Cleanup practices could also lead to greenwashing through new schemes to offset the use of plastics through plastic collection.

Chemistry behind 'earthy' scent

Chemistry Behind 'earthy' Scent

On rainy days, we often catch a whiff of that distinctive 'earthy' scent in the air. Many attribute it to the rain itself or the clouds. However, the main source of this smell is 'Geosmin,' a compound produced by Actinomycetes, a type of bacteria, in the soil.

Geosmin gives off an earthy and musty aroma. When raindrops hit the ground, they create aerosols that carry Geosmin into the air. Humans are incredibly sensitive to Geosmin's odor, and even a tiny amount (0.006 - 0.01 mg per liter of water) can be detected. The 'earthy' or 'muddy' flavor sometimes found in freshwater fish like carp and catfish primarily comes from Geosmin. Fortunately, adding vinegar when cooking these fish can effectively remove this taste as Geosmin breaks down into odorless hydrocarbons in acidic conditions.

Chemistry Behind 'earthy' Scent

To anyone wondering if it's worth it to tear down fascist posters or whatever. I spent a few months last year engaged in silent battle with another student at my school who was putting anti trans stickers up everywhere. I had it down to a system where every night I would walk the five block radius they went up in, and tear down all the ones I could reach, and use a stick to put duct tape over the others. Like, within hours of the stickers going up, I would have already purged the whole zone. I knew the basic schedule of whoever put them up based on when and where the stickers appeared. I probably could have found them in person if I'd wanted to. And I told all my classmates and friends what the stickers looked like and got them to rip them down too. And after a few months of this, the stickers slowed, and then stopped forever.

My point is, a lot of this fashy or right wing stuff is one local weirdo. And if you pay attention, and do a little light organizing with your friends, you can basically make their efforts into a giant sisyphisean exercise in misery. You control your streets!
