also, I had people ask for a print so you can get this via the link in my bio! :)
In this extract from (insert any trashy reincarnation manhwa/manhua name), the writer interests the reader through the use of overused and mundane story lines. The writer first utilises a flashback to the first time the main character died. Though some may believe the purpose of that would be to invoke mystery, the reader most likely has read 50 manhwas/manhuas with the exact same plot and so they can probably predict the exact story from this point on. In actuality, what interests the reader is to see if they’re predictions, by some coincidental chance, don’t come true and this manhwa/manhua is worth reading, which it certainly isn’t going to be. This inspires the reader to continue to read the next 20 chapters either for guilty pleasure or in naïve hope.
Furthermore, the writer interests the reader through the introduction of a magical system. Most likely, the reader will never be able to fully comprehend this lore as the writer will go out of their way to make it as complicated as possible with less clarity than is necessary. The reader is then imbued with a sense of competitiveness, probably beginning to think things like “what’s up with this author, thinking they can outsmart me”. This interests the reader by giving them a feeling of superiority, as they will then go on to spend who-knows-how-long reading this manhwa/manhua in order to point out any continuity errors in the system without ever figuring out what’s actually going on.Â
