Ok, y’all, so I have made a decision regarding Dr. Bright.

I have been working on a romance-themed fanfic with an OC of mine and the character I’ll be discussing for the past few years, with a three-and-a-half-year writer’s block in between writing sessions. I was focusing on other interests during that period until I got back into SCP in late March. And I was rudely welcomed back to hearing about Dr. Bright’s author. It turns out that AdminBright is apparently a sexual predator. They have committed mainly sexual harassment, grooming, and other sexually inappropriate atrocities toward underage girls and young women. They are also in possession of child p*rn and nonconsensual nudes. All of these sex offenses weren’t only committed outside of the SCP-verse. Turns out that AdminBright’s self-insert, Dr. Bright, also committed sex offenses. The author and character are basically intertwined. 

My initial reaction to this controversy was denial. I recall first getting into SCP when I was 17, when I was still in high school. I honestly used to like Dr. Bright because of how relatable he was in terms of depression, of which I struggled with at the time. Around October or November of 2018, an idea for a fanfic was born: a fanfic between such character and an original character of mine. I was aware of AdminBright’s existence then, yet I was ignorant of all the sex offenses that they committed because 1) I was just a kid unaware of a lot of the screwed up stuff they did, hence 2) I was a newcomer into the community. Fast forward to late March this year, when I found out the truth about Dr. Bright (both the author and character), I was shocked yet in denial. I couldn’t believe that I was unaware of all of that the whole time! 

While newer ideas finally surfaced in my mind about the trajectory of my fanfic, I read the community’s thoughts of the controversy on Tumblr. Some users there still wanted to keep Dr. Bright’s namesake in their works and posts while they condemn the author’s actions simultaneously. Others signal that, NOPE, the author and character are just the same thing, so keeping the name would be disrespectful to victims. Since I have never interacted with the author whatsoever throughout my time as an SCP fan, I initially decided that I wanted to keep the name Dr. Bright as the character’s namesake.

Then I realized that doing so wasn’t such a good idea. By reading the statement one of AdminBright’s victims wrote, that was when I began to change my mind about my decision. I learned that keeping around Dr. Bright’s namesake is a slap in the face for the victims. No one deserves to be treated and messed around like that, even if it’s by a fan they don’t know too well.

In response to this, I am announcing that I will be dropping the name that creep put on the character and deleting all the hideous things that they both done. I will also be rewriting and possibly redesigning the immortality amulet as to not retraumatize victims. I will continue to develop and write my fanfic but with these changes given the controversy. 

But the name change will not be to Dr. Elias Shaw because DJKaktus, the person behind the name change, also has allegations against him. Not only for sexual predatory behavior, but also for transphobic remarks. Trans people have a right to exist, and they also have a right to be proud of their gender identity. Additionally, like I said, no one deserved to be preyed upon by a sexual predator, especially if the target is a minor-turned-legal adult.

I have seen a few Tumblr users change Dr. Bright’s name to different ones that aren’t Shaw, actually. There’s @thesimpgod13’s Dr. Ambrose, @huniipotii’s Dr. Bolts, and @mattastr0phic’s Dr. Myriad, both of which are great renames of said character. Well, lemme introduce mine to y’all…Dr. Osborne (I’m not sure about changing the first name or redacting it, but I need some ideas). Anyway, I have killed off the Bright namesake and all the horrible things both the character and author have done.

TLDR: After getting back into SCP to return to my fanfic, I learned that the author behind Dr. Bright is a p*dophile and they used their self-insert to prey upon their victims. I was in denial until I read one of the victim’s testimonies, which made me change my mind about the controversy. DJKaktus also has a set of allegations against him. Because of this, I will not only change the name to Dr. Osborne in place of Dr. Bright and Dr. Shaw, but also rewrite the immortality concept and redesign the amulet.
