Did you ever say anything along the lines of the most important things for writing a character is actively keeping in mind what they want, why they want it, what's stopping them from having it, and what are they willing to do to get it, or did I get that from someone else?

This is a genuine question because I recognize that's entirely too ordered to be something I thought up on my own and I know I listen to you for writing advice a lot

The important questions for character design are (and I stole this from Yahtzee):

One - What does this character want?

Less in terms of concrete outcomes and more in a general sense of what motivates them. Things like being loved, or being good at their job. Maybe they already have it in which case how do they keep it?

Let's apply this to Niva as an example: Niva wants to make her sister happy.

Two - What is this character's defining strength?

This has to be related to the plot and what allows them to affect the plot. This is what it means for a character to have agency. Being able to make things happen in the plot, rather than the plot happening AT them.

Niva is the Avatar, simple.

Three - What is this character's defining flaw?

When people are giving characters flaws, they usually go for generic flaws unrelated to the rest of the character, like anger issues or trust issues. But this is in regards to what they want. What is it that is keeping them from achieving their goal?

Niva is an asocial coward, who possessively clings to her sister and puts heavy emotional burdens onto her.

Four - What is this character's defining quirk?

This isn't related to the plot, this is the little irrational weirdnesses that make someone human.

Niva is very physically affectionate, usually snuggling up with Lavi when they're at home or having a grip on her arm when they're out.
