DON'T BULLY PEOPLE OVER FANFIC ITS NEVER JUSTIFIED NO MATTER WHAT!!
You are a lovely and creative writer!!!
In recent weeks, I have been receiving hate anons on my ao3 fic. I have tweeted about it here and there, but have mostly ignored it. Unfortunately, today I received another, and due to the content, I feel like I have to respond. It’s been said before but it bears repeating: public accusations like these are damaging to creators, even when they are phrased passive aggressively rather than direct.
I shall endeavor to answer these in full in this message and then I don’t plan to address this issue again. I would have preferred this to be resolved more maturely, through conversation, but as these remarks have been placed in the public sphere, and have been happening for weeks now, I am opting to reply openly.
The concept of an A!A that could be softer was inspired by a number of A!A fanfics, particularly 'The Rogue You Were', and I have always been open about this. In fact, were you to look at chapter 1 of Whither, an acknowledgment exists. Whither’s foundation was built on this concept, and grew into 2 – going on 3 now – full longfics from there. I have never been shy about where my original inspiration came from.
These tropes that I am now accused of copying (masquerades, Raphael-esque characters, Astarion being murderous, comic relief, and bats) are as we all know common tropes amongst the fandom and amongst vampire literature, and were not new concepts when they were used by the person claiming credit for them.
My favorite thing about fandom spaces is that they are a place to share ideas and collaborate. The person who made this accusation was someone I considered a friend: we had openly expressed to each other various instances where she and I were inspired by each other’s work. I have credited her influences; she has not credited mine. Dredging up screenshots to support this statement would be exhausting, and I hope it doesn’t become necessary. I’d much rather be working on my fic than dealing with this, and I hope this is the end of it so we can all get back to doing what we enjoy with our time.
I have as of late retreated from reading other fanfic within the fandom; mental health issues and intense impostor syndrome have rendered it impossible for me to engage in others’ writing, no matter how much I’d like to. Art, being something in the fandom that is removed from writing, is something I really enjoy seeing and delve headfirst into, but I am not at all up to date on the latest fic trends. These ideas (the masquerade, batstarion, and a more light-hearted tone) are things my editor and I have long wanted to add to the fic, but they did not fit into the plot right away. Presenting a cohesive, well-thought-out story has always been the most important thing to me, rather than chasing the latest trend.
We are all playing the same game, writing from the same base material, often for the same characters with slightly different takes on those characters. There is no way to write for a fandom, particularly one like this, without a fair bit of overlap. I've worked hard this year to find my peace with that, and to not see others using similar plot points as copying. We are all appreciating the same masterpiece of a game, after all.
And lastly, I’d like to add that I don’t in any way condone harassing anyone, anonymously or otherwise, so please do not do so on my behalf.
Comment can be seen in this chapter, will post a screenshot if it's deleted:
It's okay to enjoy different ending including ascension for Astarion and god gale
I have been seeing comments about how people are afraid of choosing and enjoying ascended Astarion or God gale ending because they are scared of ridicule, scared of being 'wrong' and afraid of offending abuse victim because they have seen so many negative discourse against those endings for Astarion and Gale.
Let me tell you, YOU ARE NOT an abuse enabler or offending abuse victim just because you like those endings, the people who accused you directly or indirectly of being wrong, evil or "too dumb to understand the narrative" or "delusional" are nothing but fandom police who try to manipulate and bend people to do what they wanted with fear using pseudo progressive language. They don't like content for ascendant Astarion and god gale so they wanted it gone
They do it like cult leader trying to control the population. And this is not a problem that is exclusive to bg3 only. It happening in many fandom. "I don't like this so I have to control people to not like this as well." This is the real abuse, this is the real manipulation tactic
What's matter in fandom is you having fun, not bending over to what the majority or some people wanted. Your moral and self worth shouldn't be tied to fandom and fandom discourse . You are fine, don't be scared of choosing different ending for these DnD blorbos
All the speech about concerning over moral or abuse is not real, it's just people on the internet doesn't like something and try to influence other to not like it as well. This also extended to ship
BG3 Companions in Stardew Valley!
Astarion (Ascendant)
He's the richest guy in the valley who lives in a castle up in the mountain.
And often hanging out at his palace/castle, the saloon/bar, forest, or in the wizard tower.
He's flamboyant, fancy, and a generous patron but has a VERY low opinion about those who lives in the underground (underdark) be it monster, shadow people or dwarves (except for Krobus) he'll give the most expensive gifts and will take the farmer out for a drink or a vacation trip to another town once he's close with them.
He lives in the castle with his consort and they often held parties. But the more the farmer get to know him and stayed at the valley, the more they realized that while there are people who genuinely get along with Astarion, some are depended on his patronage or weary of him.
There's rumors about dark secrets that he keeps in his castle but DONT try to uncover them or at best he'll turn you into a dove (if you know you know) and at worst... Well RIP to you farmer
At the highest of friendship, Astarion will offer to turn the farmer into a vampire and become a part of his family. It has pros and cons. If rejected then he'll wipe the farmer's memory of this offers and pretend everything is cool...
Gives the vampire lord alcohol, prismatic shard, bat wings, books, or diamond
Karlach
Ah... The resident monster hunter/lumberjack/the lady who fix and upgrade your house/bodyguard for hire. She's probably one of the strongest (physically) person in the valley, she's the one who welcomed the farmer and show them what she's done for the house free of charge. Karlach also can be found in the mine hauling rocks and minerals or at deeper level fighting monsters alongside with Wyll.
She also often ventured out to the forest either just to relax or... Fighting more monsters.
If the farmer lives in the wilderness farm then sometimes they'll see Karlach hanging around to clean their land from infestation.
At higher level of friendship Karlach will help the farmer around their farm, give house/farm upgrade discount, and going on an adventure with them! A lot of people ( *cough* women ) have crush in her so the farmer would occasionally hear people gushing about her
But sometimes you won't see her hanging outside or even at her place, there's rumor that she's 'not well' and if asked about it she'll try to divert the conversation but at highest level of friendship she'll confess about her past and the fact she's burning up from the inside
Give Karlach complete breakfast, superfood, books about combat, and beer!
Wyll
This guy is an absolute sweetheart and a man of integrity, he's the protector of the valley and a member of adventuring guild who is eager to prove himself time and time again. Wyll has traveled far and wide on his own so he has a lot of stories to tell the farmer. Despite being the son of a Duke, he's a laid back and down to earth guy, just don't prode too much about his horns if you are not close with him. Wyll can be found in the guild, mountain, deep in the mine or forest fighting monsters and also at the saloon.
Just like Karlach, if the farmer lives in wilderness farm then they could find Wyll fighting back monsters and fiends at night. Wyll also will carry the farmer to the clinic if he found them passed out at night or from injury
If the farmer wander around town, sometimes they will see him training the kids swordfighting
Wyll would take the farmer out for a drink, training, and a walk around the forest at higher level of friendship. Sometimes he'll send monster loot or minerals via the mail.
Despite his gentlemanly demeanor, if you look close enough at his place you'll find certain questionable items such as dark talisman or certain books about devil and demon. If the farmer placed stairs in his basement, they'll find a secret room with many bookcases, several chest full of weapon and magical items also a pentagram on the floor. Wyll would be upset at the farmer when he caught them snooping and asked them to leave but he'll try to explain himself (kinda) that he has no ill intention and merely interested in the dark arts to fight evil.
At the highest level of friendship Wyll would confessed his contract with Mizora, conflict with his father and his wish to be freed from the devil. Gift him alcohol, homemade food, copper/iron/gold bar, artisan goods (but not pine tar) or book about monsters!
Astaroth (My Tav)
Astaroth is Astarion's consort, and the two of them are willing to have a poly relationship with the farmer but if they wanted to marry Astaroth and Astarion then the farmer must accept Astarion's offer to turn them into a vampire.
Astaroth can be found hanging out at the saloon, general store, wizard tower, his/their castle garden, and around the community center (once fixed he/they'll be inside)
Astaroth also accepted the new farmer with open arms and encouraged them to get to know others, sending expensive gifts (but not raw materials) through the mail and invitation for an afternoon tea at his place even when the farmer is still not that close with him. He's nurturing and bubbly, a popular a gossipmonger, he knows everything and everyone to the minute detail even people's deepest secret.
Soon enough he'll know yours as well... While he's an enthusiastic and a loyal friend. DO NOT flirt with Astarion unless you have an intention to court him as well because the farmer would discover how obsessed he is with Astarion
As a sorcerer he likes to talk about magical creatures, artefacts, and magic in general.
Also at higher friendship level he'll give the farmer a protection ring so they'll be safe in the mine, invite them over for tea, and even throw a birthday party for them or ask them to pose for him (he paints) Both Astaroth and Astarion have adopted and biological children so if the farmer wanted to have children but doesn't want to do the work, everything already covered. But the vampire couple won't move to the farmer's house once married, instead the farmer can stay at the castle and there'll be a room for them
And to gain friendship with him give Astaroth wine, diamond, cloth, magical item, amethyst, or flowers (but not dandelion or daffodils)
