Summary: The Gong-li Empire has been on the peak of its power for a little over a millenium, and there was a very simple reason for that - dragonkind. When the first emperor of the Li Dynasty struck a deal with a witch that would allow him to bind dragons to the crown and force them into obedience, it was the beginning of its reign of terror and the end of freedom for creatures as old as nature itself.

Now, a woman hoping to change everything enters the ranks of the elite dragon rider unit among the imperial army and meets seven men that not only change her life, but help her change the fate of the whole world.

A/N: i've been really craving some good fantasy lately and i'm so in love with dragons, so of course i had to write something for our boys! for this setting, kind of imagine a fusion of asian and western fantasy, the same with clothing - it's going to be a mix of both together. also i'm doing whatever i want with the boys' hairstyles so it's different eras all mashed together, just based on what i liked the most

Synopsis: The Dark Circus is what we call it. The shows that take place after dark are not for the faint of heart. The world of circus acts and freak shows have always been filled with wonder and oddities, but the seven men who perform after the crowds have gone and the gates have let in those who aren't afraid to venture into the dark and unknown are different. And just like their secrets that run deep, so too, does their obsession.

Teaser:

I sat in front of the mirror. The dressing area that was usually bustling with activity dark and lonely. The bulbs in the vanity flickering with a struggle to stay lit as I stared at my own reflection. The faint glow just barely enough to illuminate the terror in my eyes as my hands gripped the makeup brushes tightly. I was already fitted in a deep purple corset top and black spandex shorts.

Worlds different from my usual bright pinks and blues I wore for the day shows. They had insisted though. Being a part of the dark circus meant I now belonged to their shows. Their word being law and that meant everything down to what I wore and how I spoke. My saliva was thick in my mouth as I attempted to swallow. As much as I tried to push the fear away, I couldn’t. There was a reason no one in the day crew stepped out of their tents after the sun had set and the moon had risen.

It was their time then. The seven men who ran the dark circus and the crowd that followed them. Why had they chosen me of all people? I wasn’t anyone special. Just some run of the mill acrobat that didn’t even have her own slot. I was nothing compared to the acrobat they already had. Jimin’s reputation preceded him even though I had never personally seen him perform. I blinked at my reflection, finally returning to myself enough to wonder how long I had been staring into the mirror.

Surely, one of them would come find me soon. I needed to finish getting ready before I upset anyone more than the foul moods they all already seemed to be in. Lifting one shaky hand, I tightened my grip around the brush hoping to steady it. Before I could place bristles to skin, a hand shot out, gripping my jaw tightly and turning my face towards theirs. My heart pounded in fear as my eyes met the cold stare of Namjoon. His face was expressionless, the harsh set of his eyes the only thing giving him away as they scanned my face. His fingers tightened around my jaw at the same moment his lips turned into a frown.

“Don’t make it gaudy. It doesn’t suit you.” The quick flicker of his eyes to my brush indicated he meant my makeup.

“O-okay.” I whispered.

He released me in the next second. Walking out of the dressing room to the backstage area to prepare. I gulped, now even more nervous. My usual makeup routine was meant to be bright and bodacious. I heeded his advice, toning down my normally vibrant palette for a darker scheme. Hoping it would match my outfit and the show I was about to be made to perform in. I double checked my hair and costume in the mirror one last time. My hands were beginning to sweat, body trembling as I exited the dressing room to follow the same direction Namjoon had gone.

By the time I arrived, Namjoon wasn’t there. Only Jungkook and Jimin who glanced at me for half a second before returning to whatever conversation they had been engaged in before my arrival. Behind them sat Yoongi, who stared at me a little unnervingly. He reclined on one of the few couches, leg cocked up on one cushion enticingly. I nervously looked away, barely catching the subtle lift of one corner of his mouth as he took in my trembling form.

“Ready angel?” the sound of Jin’s voice coupled with the hand he placed low on my back sent my heart racing.

Not in a good way. He was fitted in a black vest and dark purple overcoat to match my corset. The standard ringmaster’s hat taking residence on his head as his other gloved hand gripped his cane by the middle. He lifted it, hooking the end of it under my chin to bring my eyes to meet his.

“We have a show to do.”
