Finally got around to colouring this. Kwaidan (or Kaidan) is a 1964 Japanese anthology film consisting of four different ghost stories. This illustration is based on the first segment: ”The Black Hair”.

Kwaidan: Hoichi the Earless

Inspired by the 1964 anthology film Kwaidan. Hoichi is a blind minstrel, renowned for his skill at playing the biwa (a type of lute). Especially noteworthy is his recitation of the battle at Dan-no-ura. Late one night Hoichi is approached by a mysterious samurai demanding that he recite this tale in the house of a powerful nobleman...

Kwaidan: In a Cup of Tea

Inspired by the 1964 anthology film Kwaidan. One day, a samurai sees an eerie reflection in his cup of tea, just as he is about to drink. Instead of his own face there's another, younger man grinning back at him. Startled, the samurai quickly empties the tea on the ground. He pours himself another cup, and once again, there's the reflection of the grinning man...
