Hello everybody with summer fast approaching here is your regular reminder that:

Everyone needs to wear sunscreen

SPF 50 is pretty much the best protection you can get, an SPF higher than that will have the same effect

Melanin does not protect you from skin cancer

Tanning is caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation

Spending the majority of your life receiving regular large doses of UV radiation without any skin protection is a good way to get skin cancer

Don't use tanning beds, and don't go sun tanning

Wear your fucking sunscreen

This ASAW, I'd like to make a quick post talking about queerplatonic relationships and why the term is used, as many people mistakenly believe it's a useless synonym for friends.

To start, the "queer" in "queerplatonic" is not the same as queer as in LGBT+. Queer here is referring to strangeness; to how these kinds of relationships are outside the norm. And that's the point, really – queerplatonic relationships are relationships that do not fit into the expectations for platonic and romantic relationships, thus "queering the platonic." You don't have to be queer as in LGBT+ to use the term "queerplatonic", because the term does not inherently have anything to do with whether a person using it is LGBT+.

The term is, however, highly connected to the aspec community, as it's often aspecs who use the term to describe their platonic partnerships. It originated with aces and quickly spread to the aro community, and today is used regardless of sexual or romantic orientation.

Going back for a minute to explain this concept better – what do I mean when I say "queering the platonic" or "not fitting into the expectations for platonic and romantic relationships?" Well...

Doing traditionally romantic things (such as cuddling, kissing, or going on dates) with someone you have a platonic bond with.

Living together/sharing taxes, getting married/raising children/etc with other typical adult things with someone you have a platonic bond with.

Having multiple consensual relationships.

And more examples that I can't think of as of right now.

Oftentimes, mentions of these sorts of things in queerplatonic relationships is met with "But friends can do all those things!" and, sure, but the question is not ability. It's normality.

Is it normal to see two friends getting married platonically? If I went to a school and took a survey, could I expect at least a few students to say their parents are not and have never been romantically involved? Can I walk over to the romance section of my local bookstore and see a good selection of polyamorous representation and have that be the usual sight on a trip to that store?

No, no, and no.

These things are not normalized. That is why we have queerplatonic, because to have strong bonds that are not strictly romantic and monogamous yet involve activities that are commonly considered to occur in romantic, monogamous relationships are not normalized, or even considered acceptable by some people.

Yeah, sure, queerplatonic partners can be friends. They can have a strictly platonic bond. They don't have to use this term to describe their relationship.

But I'm not seeing any stories at my local bookstore about someone deciding to move across the ocean and live with someone they do not want to be romantically involved with while also being in a romantic polyamorous relationship with several other people, now am I?

That's why we use queerplatonic.

Tl;dr: Queerplatonic relationships are not about whether the people in them are LGBT+ or if the relationship is both non-romantic and non-platonic; they're about if a relationship goes against amatonormativity and relationship norms.

This has been a PSA. Go support queerplatonic relationships.

yknow AI art has ruined an entire genre of painting to me, i saw one of those smooth anime-realism pieces and immidiately thought ''ugh, AI art'' until i noticed it was posted by an established deviantart user 6 years ago. like ive never been a huge fan of that genre but it looks like a pretty difficult style to master and i feel bad for the artists who specialized in anime-realism only to have their entire market jacked by people typing keywords into midjourney.

If you haven’t already read South Africa’s case submitted to the International Court of Justice for israel’s acts of genocide against the Palestinian people, you should take the time to do so.

But here are some highlighted portions, section by section ⬇️

1. Killing Palestinians in Gaza:

Approximately 1 in every 100 people has been killed.

1 Palestinian in Gaza is killed every 4 minutes.

hey punk

I've been interested in the topic of what punks listen to other then punk rock(tm) (punk genres that are punk entirely/punk first ie street, oi, crust, uk82, anarcho, etc) so if you could read this and rebolg with your answer that would be cool

im not doing a poll because (i figured out real quick) theirs a lot of genres and sub genres that are not punk rock (shocking) and i didn't want to shove super different sound into one space (such as the "tough guy" hardcore of a hatebreed with the straight edge youth crew hardcore of a youth of today into one box but i didn't want to make a 10 million checkbox long poll, and i didn't want to leave stuff like hip hop, electronic, folk, metal, etc off the list and have it just be the stereotypical non punk music punks listen too

so ill just explain what i mean when i say a "non punk" genres. this could go from the aforementioned hardcore ranging from pg 99 emotional hardcore to the beating vegan edge of earth crisis. gabber, brakecore, house. hiphop... 2000s mall emo... 3rd wave ska... what ever type of pop you want to call girl in red. basically as stated any thing that is not a core capital P Punk rock (tm) genre. i would also love some of the band you like in particular ( and as examples). and if you can't exactly put a real name on it you can just put a fake name on it ( agin with band as examples) such as like 90s mall goth (marilyn manson), anime fan brakecore(goreshit), 2000s pop emo (paramore)

more rambles in my note as this is already too long

Twitter post from David Wallace Wells, quoting from an article.
quote, if we had a trillion humans we would have at any given time a thousand mozarts and a thousand Einsteins. The article is from finance dot yahoo dot com, headline is Jeff bezos Ellen musk say human population not nearly big enough.
Post from Robert Evans responding to the above post.

we have many many more than a thousand people with that potential. most of them are starving, lack access to clean water, are stuck at borders staring down the barrel of some gun, or are sheltering in place from a bombardment right now
and many of the "luckier" ones are stuck working in Amazon warehouse or factories in Shenzhen or doing some other kind of hard labor for a pittance just to survive. if billionaires cared about human genius they would support taking care of people.
what Musk and Bezos really want is more people beneath them. An ever widening mountain of the poor who have to pay them fealty. there's nothing else that really matters to either man. they want compulsory praise to fill the empty space inside them.

I went to a pro-Palestine protest and I later saw that one of the local newspapers had written about it calling it a “pro-Hamas” rally. I left a lengthy comment on the article telling off the author for journalistic malpractice because not one of speakers at the rally ever said that they supported Hamas. He also conveniently omitted the fact that Jewish Voice for Peace was a major organizer of the event to try and make it seem like every single person at the rally was a Muslim. A few days later, the article got taken down. Keep calling out the mainstream media on their hypocrisy and dishonesty - your advocacy DOES make a difference!

if you're wondering how things are going over on the bird website, Green Day was on New Years Rockin Eve last night and performed American Idiot with the slight line change of saying "not a part of the MAGA agenda" instead of "redneck agenda" and conservatives are FUCKING PISSED talking about "how dare they make it political" because none of them have a single ounce of media literacy

My work boots are the most expensive shoes I’ve ever owned.

Also the most comfortable. I chose them after trying on several different brands and comparing lifespan vs usage vs comfort - I needed them for a physically demanding job, not the weekend hiking trails. I could have easily chosen cheaper boots that would have lasted long enough to be worth their low price, but I know the Sam Vimes Boot Theory and knew weaker, less comfortable boots would make my life harder in the long run.

So when the outside edge of the heel started wearing down after three years of heavy use I went to the shop I got them from and said “hey this is a common problem for me with how I walk but now it’s affecting my ankles and knees and I don’t wanna have to buy a new pair, is there a way to fix this?”

The salesman at this very fancy upscale boot store said “oh yeah, there’s a shoe repair place that can give you some heel guards - it’ll keep the rubber from wearing out.”

So at 8am this morning right after my 9hr shift ends I went to the shoe repair shop and it is the most hole-in-the-wall, is-this-a-real-business-or-a-mafia-front, am-I-gonna-get-shot tiny cinder block cube I’ve ever seen in my life. I grew up plenty poor and love me a good hole-in-the-wall business, but going from upscale store to this cash-only repair shop gave me whiplash. Wasn’t expecting this when a guy who wears three piece suits to sell boots said it’s the best place to go.

The skinny kid behind the counter looks somehow 16 and 25 at the same time, but when I tell him this place was recommended he smiles and says to hand over my boots. I hand him the vaguely warm foot-smelling boots, and stand in my socks in the 3’ square entryway surrounded by every color leather polish you could buy and watch as he turns my boots around in his hands, sizes up a crescent moon bits of plastic, and unceremoniously hammers tiny nails through them before handing them back.

The heels are perfectly level again. I can walk without almost rolling my ankles. They don’t clack loudly on the pavement or feel different. This is gonna fix my knee pain. It cost $10.

This kid had every tool he needed within arms reach, worked fast and smoothly, I was in and out the door in less than 8 minutes, and it only cost $10.

I didn’t think anything could cost only $10 anymore. I’m so used to hyperinflation prices I was spiritually thrown back to the 1400’s visiting the cobbler in town square. This kid might have been that cobbler and just decided to never die.

I’m still reeling from the whiplash, and gobsmacked at the price, and thrilled I didn’t have to go buy new, worse work boots (cuz I don’t have that kind of money for a second pair, I’m expecting these ones to last a decade) and it feels like I just experienced one of the rare little chunks of magic that floats around our world.
