A story that the Jews tell each other is that when the slaves were fleeing Egypt they came to the edge of the Red Sea and thought: well, fuck, this is it. Water in front of them and enemies behind. They had escaped, sure, but all this meant was that they were going to die free instead of in chains. A meaningful distinction in an abstract sense, but the Jews are a practical people, and mostly what they were concerned with in that moment was: they would be equally dead either way.
A man stepped out from the group. He stepped into the water. He said: mi chamocha ba’eilim adonai? Who is like you Adonai, among the gods who are worshipped? He sang that verse over and over again. He sang it as he waded into the sea. He gave his body over to his faith as he walked. There was nowhere to go but forward. If he was going to die, he figured, and be equally dead either way, he was not going to die in slavery and he was not going to die at the hands of the Egyptians, either. He was going to die walking and singing, believing, trying to find progress in the chaos, in the waves.
In the story, the water laps first at his feet, then his knees, his thighs, his ribs, his neck, finally flowing into his mouth as he sings and sings and sings. The words get choked, mispronounced: the hard cha of mi chamocha becomes mi kamoka, strangled but still certain.
In the story, this man is why the people get their miracle, the waters parting to let them cross through on dry land. It is an act of divine intervention, but it only comes because someone is willing to put his life on the line to make it happen. I keep thinking about him this week, that apocryphal man and how it is a story we make sure to keep telling each other: when there is water in front of you and enemies behind, you do not wait for your god, or a sign. You trust in something larger than yourself and open your mouth to sing about it. You put your feet on the ground and walk forward.
Ok but when Chloe in ep 8 was saying like “you did it without me” it really hit me how much Lucifer has changed because season 1 his answer would have been like been something vain and self-aggrandizing, but now “it’s because I channeled you” i love it so much
yes yes yes yes
One of the most interesting things this (1/2) season was seeing the ways Lucifer has actually incorporated the things he’s been learning all this time into who he is now (and who he wants to be moving forward).
I mean, look at earth time/hell time. To Lucifer, the years in LA were like the tiniest, tiniest blip on his radar even just compared to the thousands of years he spent in hell afterwards (i.e., after the S4 finale), let alone the entirety of his existence.
Michael shows up and plays on Chloe’s fears (essentially, the ones she voices in the S4 finale: that Lucifer would forget her or get caught up in cosmic-scale stuff). Michael is the one who relies on ideas that Lucifer would backslide, would go dark, would forget.
But when Lucifer comes back thousands of years later, he doesn’t struggle to remember who he was or what was important to him. If anything, he seems to have abandoned the crutches he had before (drinking, partying, drugs, sex, etc.) and he focuses more on the people he cares about.
In the beginning, this is mostly Chloe, sure, but actually accepting and wearing that bracelet from Dan? Not once implying he didn’t want Trixie hanging around if she didn’t come with her mom? Being genuinely concerned that Michael and his fear had got to Linda? Initiating touch and hugs??? Making a joke of his Devil face to make Charlie laugh? Comforting Ella???
He didn’t spend that time in Hell sitting around feeling sorry for himself (at least not all the time) and (most importantly) blaming everyone else for his being there. He spent that time remembering everything good that he’d lost; he spent that time missing them so much that he ditched a lot of his pride and superiority when he got back.
Obviously, he’s not a different person entirely. He’s still got anger and resentment; he still lashes out when struck; he’s still really good at thinking up scary punishments. But that’s not his primary motivator anymore.
Also the parallel between Lucifer trying to solve a crime in Hell in 5x01 and Lucifer trying to find Chloe in 5x08—both by trying to incorporate the things he’s learned from her—is really a thing of beauty. Another little thing: this time, he didn’t dress up like Chloe or try to get in her head by pretending to be her--no. All the lessons he’s learned from her are part of him now.
He’s already learned Chloe doesn’t need his help—she wants it. I think maybe he also needed to learn that he can be successful without her—but that he vastly prefers her being there. And I think it was important for Chloe to see that despite his glibness and distractibility and impatience . . . he does pay attention, does learn, does change.
So ... I love it so much, too <3
Fake Service Dogs?
You’re sitting at a cafe with your friend when suddenly a woman walks in with a toy poodle in her purse. The manager at the counter informs her “I’m sorry, but we do not allow dogs”. She replies with a heavy sigh and a “She’s a service dog. She can come with me”. Not knowing much about service dog law, and worrying about getting sued for asking further questions, he sits this woman down at a booth. There, she promptly unzips her purse and places the dog on the booth seat next to her. When the woman’s food comes out, the little dog begs and she feeds her bits off her plate. This dog is not public access trained, and proceeds to bark at those who walk by. This dog is a nuisance and causes many in the restaurant to complain. The manager cannot do anything but inform the unhappy customers that this is a service dog, so he can’t ask her to leave. In the end, it’s the customers who end up leaving.
Now I walk in with my highly trained service dog pressed against my leg in a perfect heel position, and I’m quickly bombarded by the manager telling me “No dogs! No dogs! We ALL know what happened last time”. Confused, I tell him “This is my medical alert and medical response service dog. Her right to accompany me is protected under federal law.” With a sigh, he seats me at a table far away from others where my dog promptly tucks under my feet, out of sight. When my food arrives my dog is still tucked tightly under the table because she knows she’s not supposed to eat when she’s on duty. She stays there ignoring those who walk past for the remainder of my meal. When we leave, a woman by the door exclaims “Woah, I didn’t know there was a dog here!”
See the difference?
Scenario number two occurs at a local grocery store when a man decides to bring his certified emotional support animal into the store with him. Upon entering he flashes a fancy ID card and certification papers. This dog is not as unruly as the first, but he still forges ahead of his handler, sniffs the food on display, and may seek attention from those who walk past. You find this dog adorable, and when he and his owner walk past you ask to pet him. The owner says yes and explains how all he had to do was go online, register his dog, and a few weeks later they sent him a vest, ID card, and certification papers.
Now I pull into the same grocery store. I’m in a rush to get an ingredient for a dish I’m making so I hurry into the store with my service dog next to me. I’m quickly stopped by a manager who demands to see my service dog’s certification card. Remember, this is NOT required by law, and most real service dog teams don’t have them. After 15 minutes of trying to educate, pulling up the ADA website on my phone, back and forth bickering, and drawing more of a crowd than I want to describe… I’m finally allowed in. I grab my ingredient, stand in line (where my service dog obediently moves between my legs to make space for those around me), and I get bombarded by people asking to pet my dog. I explain that she’s working, she has a very important job to do, and she’s not allowed to be pet while on duty. People walk away grumbling and complaining about how rude I was when other handlers like the man they met earlier allow their dog to be pet.
Moral of the story? Fake service dogs create real problems. The ones who are impacted the most are the true service dog handlers who rely on their dogs every day to help mitigate their disability. How would you feel if everywhere you went, you couldn’t make it 10 feet in the door because people were asking you questions? Imagine how much time that would take out of your already hectic day. Businesses lose customers because word gets out that there are unruly dogs in their store, customers become misinformed and start thinking some of these behaviors are okay, some people even start to believe the lies that anyone can just register their dog online and make him a service dog. The result? MORE fake service dogs. MORE real problems.
