Ghost Hunt Volume 9
Ghost Hunt Volume 9
by Lysiithea
This is three months after the Agawa investigation. The SPR has been called to investigate strange happenings at a boarding school/orphanage. The case was brought to them first by a mysterious letter claiming to be written from a dead person, then by a councillor representative of the orphanage school. Upon investigating, things are not what they seemed to be.
This fic does a really fine job capturing the feel of Ghost Hunt, picking up right after the Akumu series. It’s written similarly to the Ghost Hunt novels, with Mai as the narrator, so that it feels a lot like the real deal.
The author weaves the mystery well with plenty of unsettling and creepy moments involved. Plus they also sneak in some superb (and believable) MaiRu gems in there! The author had gone on hiatus for a while due to their manuscript notes getting lost, but it seems like they finally managed to get everything set up again, so I’m looking forward to more updates in the future! If you’re looking for that good old GH scare, I fully recommend this giving this story a try! And I urge you to leave the author some lovely comments to welcome them back into the fandom!

@glmfic your story is like a stand alone movie for Ghost Hunt (and you should be hella proud)
(Fan art for the fanfic Ghost Hunters, Lies, and Money by the amazing @glmfic)
GO CHECK IT OUT!!!
(PS: totally not done drawing stuff for this fic, I’ve been a fan for years)
(next doodles will be what I think her characters look like and some John and Masako fluff)
Unpopular opinion
I’m on the fence about half-troll Jim. I like him but…
Seeing him for the first time was such a shock for me that I basically had the same reaction as Arrrgghhhh. “No like troll Jim.”
It’s an interesting development but it has so much angst attached to it. We see what pleasures of being human Jim loses in addition to his humanity. He’s a completely different person to me and all I can do is miss the OG Jim with all of his emotions and expressiveness.
Not to mention him and Claire can barely do anything with their relationship now. It looks fine, but if you think about how different his life will be from now on compared to hers, it’s frustrating and will be hard on them both.
I feel probably the most sympathy for his mother. She can never again gaze upon the face she of the boy she raised. Jim’s sudden disappearance will have to covered up by maybe a “death the eternal knight” or something. To lose your child so soon like that. To have to pretend that he’s dead or something. I don’t know. It just makes me incredibly sad.
But at the same time, I like him. His new personality is just likeable in general and I like the angst.I love angst.I love to suffer. I like interspecies romance too. I love how much closer he is to Blinky and Arrrgghhhh now.
But please for the love of god, allow him to take the suit off!
fun parisian moments from a real life parisian (for ml fic writers) part 2
everything is closed on sundays so you can’t go out shopping or go to a restaurant
baguette with butter as breakfast
fountain pens are necessary for school
that moment when you underline something in fountain pen with a ruler and once you lake away the ruler, it smudges
the really smelly pen that erases fountain pen and then rewrites it
the water in the seine is never clear, it’s always dirty
no swimming in the seine that’s illegal
“bateaux mouches” are boats that go around the Seine and it’s mostly for tourists but it’s also a fun date activity (you go under the lover’s bridge and it’s cute
after your meal the waiter always asks if you want coffee. most people usually say yes.
a classic French snack is brioche with “milka” chocolate inside.
examples of candy are haribo, kinder, and milka. they do have american candy though, but not Hersheys because it’s not “real chocolate”.
9th grade is actually the last grade in middle school (college). there are only 3 grades in high school (lycée)
the official names for classes go down from 12th (kindergarden) to 1st (11th grade). 12th grade is called Terminale.
Even though they are officially called 11th, 10th, 9th, 8th, 7th, they are most commonly known as CP, CE1, CE2, CM1, CM2 respectively
There are no “finals” in lycée. There is a Bac Francais at the end of 11th grade and a Final Bac at the end of 12th.
Teens don’t say bonjour to each other if they know each other well, it’s salut or even just “ma moeuf!” (my girl!) or “mec!”(dude!) or any variation of that
hugging is not really a thing! you greet everyone with a quick kiss on each cheek
paris at night is really pretty
it is not uncommon for kids to go out during school nights
anything from a french boulangerie that is not made of bread (baguette and vienoiseries) has to be refrigerated!!
even though it’s not directly translated like this “je t'aime” means I love you. You don’t say “je t'adore” when you’re trying to confess
a sunny day in paris is actually quite rare. it’s a pretty grey city.
Besides the bit about Jim dying, I have to agree with this. As cool as troll Jim is, I couldn’t get past the thought that it was so against everything the show was about. And also, I don’t know how Jim and Claire’s relationship is gonna work from here but I’m not going to question that for now.
Some thoughts on Trollhunters S3 and Anton Yelchin
Alright so Trollhunters season 3? It was as good as it was wayyyyy too short.
However…
The writing surprised me a little bit at first as some things felt a little bit… off? Or awkward? Now Trollhunters is the show I watch knowing and accepting that it is a kid show, with a typical kid scenario that feels a lot rushed and simplistic. However, I was surprised, at first, how several elements from S1 and S2 were entirely left out of S3, namely the whole thing about the Deep (what the hell was that about) and how Jim, as the first human trollhunter, has a strength of his own. Both of these things I want to address separately.
Spoilers under the cut!
Concerning the Deep, it was entirely ignored during S3 and even the whole scene in S2 was… too short. I thought it was that way because we would eventually get an explanation on what happened down there, but we didn’t. So I thought about this and figured it was probably because they wanted to keep as much of the work Anton Yelchin did into the show as a way to honor him. Maybe? That could explain why some scenes felt a little bit awkward and off topic: those scenes might have been cut off the episodes under normal circumstances. The Deep, for instance, serves absolutely no purpose, but does allow a few more voice lines from Yelchin inside the show.
That could also explain why there was so very few development between secondary characters compared to S1 and S2. As such, there was no Creepslayerz and sadly (to me), very little Changelings (the cliffhanger from the end of S2 had me hoping we would see a lot more Strickler and Nomura. We’ve got some very good Strickler content, but almost no Nomura which I thought was sad. I also would have wished to see more of the Changelings teaming up and helping the Trollhunters, but oh well). However, maybe I am a little bit harsh on that point, since we’ve got some pretty awesome town action throughout S3 that leaves me pumped for an Arcadia Oaks aware that supernatural beings exist.
Back to Yelchin: if what I’m guessing is true, then… well, I think it’s a good choice that they kept as much of his work into the show as they could, even if it cost some of the quality of the storytelling. Overall, I think S3 was great despite it’s shortcomings. Concerning the end, with Jim becoming a troll, it was… well, heartbreaking (in a good way), but felt, to me, so incredibly weird storytelling wise. What happened was the opposite of the whole message of the show (Jim’s humanity is his strength and stuff), which felt super weird to me. Now I thought it was good that Strickler and Nomura would tell Jim that humanity is weakness (and would have hoped to see them becoming more aware that it is not, especially on Strickler’s side, though he kind of did but you know…). I also loved that Merlin brought it up and offered the choice to Jim (because Merlin sucks holy shit!). I’m mad that Jim accepted however, but it did gives us a pretty badass fight scene towards the end (although it could have been done by having MORE of the Trollhunters, the Changelings and the Creepslayerz uniting against Gunmar… but oh well!)
Somebody on Tumblr (I can’t remember who, yikes!) brought up that Jim becoming a troll might have something to do with the show moving on from Yelchin’s death, which is a theory I am willing to go with as it feels like the most logical explanation from this 360 degrees turn from the original plot line. As such I feel that it could be very interesting to see how that evolves in the future (as heartbreaking as it is). However, I’m a bit intrigued by how exactly Jim can still be part-human (aside from, like, in his heart or something) and still burn in the sunlight and be pretty much 100% troll. So maybe we’ll get more of that explained in the future, hopefully. I’m not necessarily hoping that Jim switches back to his human form but…
It would have felt less weird and more… errrr… fluid storytelling-wise if Jim had simply died during the battle. Sacrificing himself, becoming the new Merlin or some shit, I don’t know. Of course, this is a kid show, so I suppose it’s not really an option to have the main character die.
So alright, that’s it! Thank you for reading and feel free to share you thoughts with me if you have any!
ALSO STRICKLER WITH WINGS GIVES ME LIFE THANK YOU GOODBYE
