I keep seeing stuff that’s like ‘enemies to lovers is lit, we need some toxicity sometimes’ but like … no? that’s not what the enemies-to-lovers trope is about. 

enemies-to-lovers is about mutual respect. when you go from seeing someone in a negative light to falling in love with them, you see and acknowledge every facet of their personality. in fandom, that means that they can kick your ass, and you know it. the power dynamics aren’t a key part of it - it’s about acknowledgement that you both know every part of each other. you have hated this person, and you have both grown out of why. 

relationships are about growing together, and that’s why enemies-to-lovers takes the cake. when you’ve hated someone, you know their faults. you just choose to see past them and love them for the person they are always becoming, not the person they once were. 

I’d argue that the equalizing aspect of enemies-to-lovers means that when done right it can be a lot more powerful and healthy than other tropes.
