The Most Intriguing Thing About L's Character To Me Is His Characterization In Various Media. The Anime

The most intriguing thing about L's character to me is his characterization in various media. The anime and manga are pretty similar as far as I'm aware (only in chapter 4 of the manga so I can't say) but then there's the L: Change the WorLd novel and the Death Note Musical. My favorite portrayal of L has to come from the novel. It's still L. But he's definitely a lot more sympathetic and human, even seeing Maki as a little sister of sorts. And in the musical, though he doesn't lean towards the family type at all, you really do get to see just how much L's relationship to Light mattered to both. In The Way it Ends, their rivalry is front and center and you can really feel so many emotions through the music. It's a lot more human than the L we get in the anime/manga. Basically I couldn't see anime/manga L singing The Way It Ends but I can definitely see novel L doing so.

In short, I think Jon didn’t exactly make it to “Somewhere else” and is sort of embodying the tapes. Or rather the tapes are binding him, all that remains of him, etc.? That to me would explain why 1) Martin doesn’t seem shocked at all by the tape recorder. Which is ODD, considering they were massively involved with Annabelle and the Web’s entire plan for the Archivist? Regardless, 2.) Martin is… Friendly with it. His tone is… Just pleasant surprise. A slightly Silly tone, like!!! If he already knows it’s Jon, he won’t be shocked at the appearance of the tapes AND he’d be friendly and sweet towards it (ha.)

That’s the more Martin side of things, onto Jon. His voice in reverse at the end is very clearly, well. Him. And it’s incredibly strange to have that happen on the tape. Would make sense if he was trying to communicate in any way he can. Lastly, the codes. As far as I know, base 64 and 32 (?) are cyphers specifically used to ensure a message gets transferred safely from one place to another. That… Would fit perfectly. Jon (either in between plains of existence or some other horrible thing) wouuuld need a protection like that trying to reach Martin, who’s presumably Somewhere Else TM!!
