The house is quiet but the lights are still on and Mark’s about to call out to see who’s home when he hears Katrina’s voice from down the hall. He can hear it clear and direct as she says, “Mark might not love you anymore after all this mess.” His jaw clenches and the weight that’s been suffocating him for the past week squeezes some more air from his lungs. He doesn’t wait for more to be said as he stalks down the hall and into the living room, watching as Katrina’s eyes widen just a bit when she sees him. It’s surprise in her eyes, realization that she’s been caught planting seeds for whatever she wants to happen. But it’s not remorse, not guilt for what she’s said to Adam.

He knows his decision is made before he even says anything. The debates of working out deals and paying back money owed are flying out of his mind. He’ll pack a car tonight, take his brother and start the journey to Queensland. Away from Knuck, away from Sugar, away from whatever poison’s being whispered in his brother’s ear. He’ll pack them up and keep them safe and if that means leaving behind the woman he’s loved for the last five years then so be it.
