I hope the Barbie movie really gets the girls together.

Reddit found out that the dolls can connect infinitely so I present a collection of their creations progressively getting worse.

I am in my monster high era rn, I’m sorry.

I think some of the inconsistencies make it pretty clear that the project as is has too many objectives. The OG collection did feature 8 characters, the main goyles, in 2010. However, the project as a whole was much smaller. The dolls were only accompanied by a web series at the time, not a T.V cartoon, which used flash animation that was easier to produce. The finer details of their designs are also more complicated.

But, these issues don’t seem so bad. It’s not like The Bratz Sasha box art level bad. (Although, Clawdeen does seem more fair between some of the advertisements and the show, but this maybe due to photo quality).

- Cleo's outfit is different in her box art and doll. In her box art she wears pants, sandals and don't have bandages on all her arm. Her doll version has a dress, boots and bandages all over her arms. Also her shade of blue varies (going from light blue in her doll version to saturated in her voice actor reveal to dark blue in her box art). Also skin color inconsistency

- Frankie's design is different in their voice actor reveal and doll. Both their hair and outfits are completely different

- Lagoona's outfit is also different in her design reveal and doll. She also have some inconsistencies with her hands (in art being blue while her doll is pink) and eyes (having brown eyes in her fabric doll, brown with blue hint in the Clawdeen music video and a sort of greyish blue in her voice actor reveal). Squale and freckles also inconsistent in voice actor reveal and doll

- Clawdeen has variation in her hair. The quantity of purple and it's saturation varies (first leak design being entirely purple and pale, voice actor reveal having some purple with a darker purple in the inside, doll have purple in different spot, Clawdeen music video is back with lighter purple all around but not the same shade as first leak). Also she loses her glasses in her coffin bean image and Clawdeen music video. Also her box art gave her a weird yellowish skin

- Torelei has short hair in her voice actor reveal and long hair in her doll

- Draculaura has a hat in her voice actor reveal but a headband in her doll version

The new monster high dolls look really cool. I like a lot of the elements of the new designs and the new sculpts are pretty neat. They’re clearly based off of some of the original proportions, but now their figures are less sinewy and lithe. They also have articulation in the chest now!

Today’s showcase is a couple of times Barbie came out of her comfort zone and ventured into late 90s-y2k trends with translucent glitter platforms, trendy layered or patterned dresses and dark lips. Hollywood Nails and Amazing Nails. If you’re thrifting or ebaying: HN Barbie and Christie often have broken kanekalon due to Barbie’s hairnot and Christie’s rolled front hair.

The second set are Fairytopia Magical Mermaid: Barbie gave these dolls collector level screenings. My Kayla has kanekalon & Christie has saran. The mermaid dolls had vinyl tails that did not hold up well so you can often get a bargain because the doll’s lower body is torn.

So if the current extra or fashionistas leave you unmoved, take a dive into 2000s Barbie! Aliexpress has quite a few under “NK head” or ebay is a good bet by searching for the character names “kayla,lea,christie,nikki,teresa” and words like “ethnic, aa, asian” and be forewarned that some people list their dolls of colour with outdated or outright offensive language.

I found quite a few holiday Barbies while out thrifting the other day. I get why people are so keen on collecting these their designs are ridiculous. I’m obsessed with the happy holidays Barbie with the white hair and emerald dress, vintage Barbies really were extravagant, in a way they still are in some ways today.

The 2021 holiday Barbie is one of the more stunning modern Barbies I’ve seen in a while. Its unfortunate she’s not more articulated, her design is everything a holiday Barbie should be, flashy, over the top, and seasonal. I like the metal breast plate embellishment, it reminds me of some fashion trends that are popular right now. I’m definitely impressed by her hair. I would not be surprised if people were over everyone «making a big deal» about it, but it’s impressive to see braids executed in this way, not to mention the implications of a Barbie having her hair styled this way.

(I threw the winter evening Barbie into this post because she fits right in and I’m obsessed with the fur hat and coat)

I don’t know if it’s just me, but didn’t the Sasha dolls always have the best outfits for every Bratz collection.

I remember being shocked for the first time seeing dolls the had clothes that people in the real world might or could wear. (I don’t remember everyone dressing this stylish on the regular). Although Bratz dolls always got a bad wrap for over-sexualisation and inappropriate themes (sometimes deserved), I wonder if anyone noticed the more nuanced reflection of femininity in Bratz dolls, that other doll lines weren’t exploring at the time.
