What's happening in Congo? A primer on the humanitarian crisis in Congo.
Pre-Colonial Congo. Congo's powerful kingdoms, like Luba and Kongo, thrived on trading valuable resources such as iron, ivory, and copper. This trade not only sustained the kingdoms but also spurred cultural exchange and regional development.
Colonial Congo. European colonial powers, notably King Leopold II of Belgium, exploited Congo during the rubber boom, leading to severe human rights abuses such as forced labor and atrocities. These atrocities resulted in millions of Congolese deaths.
Neo-Colonial Control. After Congo gained independence in 1960, Lumumba, its first prime minister, aimed to break from imperialism and advocate for pan-African solidarity, posing a threat to US interests. His assassination, backed by the US and Belgium, solidified neo-colonial control under Mobutu's regime.
Ongoing Crisis. Lumumba's murder still echoes in the DRC, where over 6 million have died since the 1990s. Exploitation thrives as multinational corporations profit from the country's vast resources, including crucial cobalt reserves, used in batteries of most electronic devices.
The Human Cost. Despite its wealth, the DRC remains among the world's five poorest nations, with 60 million living on less than $1.90 a day. Families endure unimaginable suffering from violence and displacement, while women and children face heightened vulnerability and exploitation in the crisis.
Speak Up. Advocate for conflict-free products from electronics manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, and Volkswagen, urging them to acknowledge their role in perpetuating this issue and demanding accountability.
Support. Back initiatives pressuring governments and multinational companies to disclose the origins of their products' minerals and uphold human rights standards in their supply chains.
Stand With. Stand in solidarity with communities affected by conflict minerals, supporting efforts to end the decades-long cycle of exploitation and violence in resource extraction.
