Thinking about how not a single one of the stories about Paul Matthews are character motivated. The apocalypse happened to him. Emma's family, and then another apocalypse happened to him. His wife being a robot happened to him. Melissa happened to him. Sure, sometimes he makes choices at the end of these, but the inciting incidents are never a result of him making decisions. Never based on his feelings. There's no call to action. He's just Paul, and things happen to him, and that's the story. It works because he's so damn entertaining when put in distressing situations.
