Claire: You’re gay.
Morgan: Me? No, no I’m not gay.
Claire: You’re not? But you just kissed me.
Morga: Okay, I’m gay.

Chimneys little girl is lost in the mall and goes up to Maddie for help/Maddie ask her if she needs help. She helps her find her daddy. 🥺
“Excuse me, miss?” Maddie looks down at the sound of a little voice, putting back the dress she had been looking at when she finds a young girl of around seven or eight looking up at her with brown, tear filled eyes. “I can’t find my daddy.” The words are said with so much sadness that it breaks Maddie’s heart as she kneels down to the girls height, frowning.Â
“What’s your name, sweetie?” She keeps her voice light, moving her hand to gently wipe at the tears that are falling down her face as she pouts at her, swaying her body from one side to the other. Maddie can remember being lost in a store once; her parents had taken their eyes off her and Daniel for just a moment and her brother had insisted on going back to grab the toy their parents had said no to. She doesn’t remember much other than just feeling terrified and alone when her brother had let go of her hand and she was all alone.Â
“Aera Han and I am seven years old.”Â
“My name's Maddie and I won’t tell you my age but it’s lots of numbers bigger than that, it’s nice to meet you Aera, that is a very beautiful name.” She’s quick to abandon her search for something appropriate for the date she was meant to be going on that night but had been trying to get out of since her best friend had set it all up. If there was anything she hated more than blind dates, it was awkward double dates and whilst Josh insisted it would be fun, she couldn’t help but doubt that in its entirety. She stands up, smiling when the little girl takes her hand, looking around for any obvious signs of a man looking for her.
The mall is busy but not horrendously so, and she’s sure she would have heard someone screaming her name by now if he was nearby. The tears, at least, are forgotten as Aera looks up at her, “It means love because my daddy loves me very much. I don’t have a mommy because a lady grew me in her belly so daddy could be a daddy.” Maddie smiles at the innocent explanation at what she can only assume is surrogacy, squeezing the hand of the little girl.Â
“Well, my name doesn’t have such a beautiful meaning so you are very lucky.” She looks down as Aera looks up, both of them smiling at each other, “Now, do you remember the last time you saw your daddy? Where were you?”Â
There’s a pondering look on her face for a second, her nose scrunching up, “Daddy was in the line buying a teddy bear for my Aunty Hen’s and Karen’s new baby and he was talking to someone and I was bored, so I went to go look at the candy and then I was lost.” Maddie nods her head, trying to figure out where there would be bears and candy as she takes a look around at all the different stores. She couldn’t have wandered too far and it certainly couldn’t have been too long or she’s sure she would have heard or seen the commotion of a parent losing their child by now.Â
“You must be really excited for your cousin?” Distraction techniques is what she usually uses in her job as a paediatric nurse, walking slowly and looking in each stop for the sign of cuddly toys or a panicked man.Â
“She cries a lot, maybe daddy thinks the bear will make her happy.”Â
It’s with a laugh that Maddie nods her head, finally coming to a stop outside a shop where she can see a security guard talking to a man who appears to be shouting, gesturing around them as others start to look around. “That’s my daddy! Look, Maddie! That’s my daddy!” She’s more than thankful for the child’s excitement and thus, her lack of volume control because it’s enough to get the attention of the distressed man and the security guard he had been shouting at until the little girls hand is gone from her own and she’s running towards the man as though it’s been years since she had seen him last.
The intensity of which he drops to his knees must hurt but he’s smiling, relief flooding his features as he wraps his arms tightly around the little girl. It’s slightly awkward as she steps towards them, chewing down on her bottom lip as she waits for the embrace to end. She’s done what she had set out to do - get the little girl back to her dad, where she was safe, so now she’s redundant. She shoots the guilty looking security guard a sympathetic look, although she’s not sure he’s entirely deserving considering he’d just let a seven year old walk right past him but he looks as though he has the weight of the world on his shoulders right then, so she can only offer him a slice of kindness he’s undeserving of.Â
“I told you she wasn’t hiding in the store.” The man has finally stood up, his hand gripping onto the little girls tightly and his attention purely on the security guard for just a second until he turns to Maddie and for just a second, she wonders if she’s about to get shouted at too. At least the anger in his eyes dissipates, replaced with that relief once more, “Thank you. Where…”Â
“Just a few stores over.” She cuts him off, wanting him to know she hadn’t wandered too far, biting down on her lip as she looks at him. He’s handsome - brown eyes that remind her of his daughter’s, a small x shaped scar in the centre of his forehead, a greying stubble and a grey tip of his black hair that’s an absolute mess in the most endearing of ways. The nervous lopsided smile on his lips and the flush of his cheeks is even more captivating and she takes a step back when she realises she’s probably making her staring a little too obvious. “I should head off but it was really nice meeting you Aera.”Â
“Daddy, Maddie helped me. Isn’t she pretty and nice? Maybe we could say thank you with a pretzel?” Maddie had seen her eying up the pretzel stand on their short walk from one store to the next, laughing at the little girl's attempt to get something she wanted whilst the man just shakes his head, his smile growing.Â
“You don’t have to thank me, I was just---”
“I-I could get you a coffee… it’s the least I can do for your trouble. If you have time, I’m sure we’ve taken up enough of it…”Â
Maddie thinks about it for only a second, knowing that Josh was probably going to murder her if she was late for the double date she didn’t even want to go on in the first place, but the seven year old is looking at her with nothing but pure excitement and the man, who still remains unnamed, seems hopeful and nervous in the most appealing sort of way. His smile is bright when she nods her head, “I’m Howie, by the way.” He finally introduces himself, and she can’t stop the grin on her own face as he does, taking his extended hand and shaking it.Â
“Nice to meet you, Howie.”
