Basically, when Dream was fourteen his name was picked from the bowl at the reaping, but Death volunteered in his stead. Ten years later, Desire's name is picked and Dream volunteers for them because something something history repeating itself. Hob and Dream end up going into the Games together, and...well you've watched the films/read the books.

Dream has no intention of dying. Hob has no intention of letting Dream die. Somewhere along the way they fall in love, but admitting that for realsies in an arena specifically designed to kill all except one is stupid, so they end up....pretending, but also not??? It's all 'for the cameras' to get sponsorships.
