"Why? You're here all by yourself!" They shake their head in confusion. "I just don't get it. Surely you've had chances to leave."

"Oh, I have. Plenty. But I know this forest like the back of my hand and it's not like I can't get cell signal out here." I hold my phone up. "This place is an introvert's paradise."

"What about, y'know, actually seeing people? I can't imagine that you've never gotten lonely out here on your own."

I shake my head and smile. "You keep assuming I'm here alone...you're wrong, of course. There's plenty of hermits in these woods."

They stop in their tracks while I keep walking. After taking a few more steps, I turn around to see them staring at me, completely befuddled. I smile. They frown.

"I've heard the stories, though. You're the only one here. No one has ever mentioned anyone else. Never." They start walking again, keeping pace beside me. "If you're not alone, where is everyone?"

"Oh, well, Kyle and Bartholomew just left earlier today to run by Lowe's and Home Depot so we can build a house for Vera. Vera is at my place pet sitting. Frankie and Georgia are grocery shopping. Julian, Tye, Dixie, and Liam are on garden duty this week and that's on the far side of the woods. I'm not sure about the others. I'm just the elected guide slash recruitment officer." I pause in my speech for a few seconds, pushing a twig away from my face. "What do you do for a living, anyway?" I glance in their direction and smile. "We're in need of a veterinarian."

You entered a forest filled with monsters. The exit constantly moves, you don’t age in the forest. When exiting, one person must stay unless they are the only one in the forest. Many a time you found the exit but let others leave. For the first time, someone asks how long you’ve been here.

A stray dog in Bolivia joined a monastery and became a monk. The resident monks of St. Francis Monastery, named for the patron saint of animals, decided to adopt a dog they call ‘Friar Bigotón’ from the Cold Nose Project, which hopes the dog’s story will now inspire more monasteries to take in homeless pets.
