Like the ability he uses that allowed him to reincarnate is the part that sells it. Ging mentioned he has one roll that only comes out when he “really doesn’t want to die” and we can assume this is how he became a chimera ant despite not being eaten by the queen.

And like it has to be a specialist ability. We don’t know exactly how it works but I can’t think of a way for it to work using any of the other category. It’s definitely possible given conjures are more likely to become specialists later in life. But for that to happen Kite would’ve had to have an extreme enough will to avoid death. Otherwise anyone could get what seems to effectively be an extra life, since most people would want a chance to cheat death in a fight.

I’ve seen other people pin it on his upbringing and I agree partially. He spent his whole childhood trying to survive so once he gets to normal life of course he’s going to be terrified of losing it. And that upbringing would require someone determined to survive no matter what. But even then it still doesn’t feel like that would be enough for him to become a specialist, plus I don’t think his backstory is canon to the manga so that’s not the original intent.

So then all we can do is wonder what happened? Is this something he picked up growing up? Did something happen while he was Ging’s student? No matter what, all we know is that he is extremely determined to survive at all costs. I just think it’s interesting because he’s such a stoic character but underneath that he’s constantly anxious and terrified of dying.
