We have been so desensitized by a hundred and fifty years of ceaselessly expanding technical prowess that we think nothing less complex and showy than a computer or a jet bomber deserves to be called “technology” at all. As if linen were the same thing as flax — as if paper, ink, wheels, knives, clocks, chairs, aspirin pills, were natural objects, born with us like our teeth and fingers — as if steel saucepans with copper bottoms and fleece vests spun from recycled glass grew on trees, and we just picked them when they were ripe...

— Ursula K. Le Guin, from “A Rant About ‘Technology’”

Every time I do yardwork I'm blown away by how much is going on down there in the soil. We inter our dead in a world with more life than our own.

since it's Dusshera today the day know for the right side's win over the wrong one

celebration of the victory of good over evil and it's lgbtq+ history month

here's another history lesson for indian queers

Since It's Dusshera Today The Day Know For The Right Side's Win Over The Wrong One

In 1987, Leela and Urmila, two policewomen from Madhya Pradesh, married each other in the first ever documented case of its kind. Their marriage was one of the first and most widely reported instance of same-sex marriage in India.

(both of them were later removed from their positions and were imprisoned. they continued to face discrimination for being 'immoral women' and for 'setting bad example over fellow women' due to which were forced to leave their village.)

SAY THEIR NAMES

The problem with commercial F/M romance is that it's written by the most heterosexual women alive and reading it you feel yourself slowly suffocating from the Gender of it all like a fish in a eutrophying lake. And what we actually need as a culture is F/M written by insane bisexuals violently allergic to heteronormativity

This is beautiful!! As an embroidery person, I can really appreciate the amount of effort put into this!

Not to mention the drawings which are absolutely beautiful

The photo is not very good and I still need to wash and iron it, but I couldn't wait to show my first ever big cross stitch project;

The Photo Is Not Very Good And I Still Need To Wash And Iron It, But I Couldn't Wait To Show My First

Love how it turned out, especially with the green embroidery thread (cotton thread on linen)

A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Blue and Green are out and about as Blue pulls out his phone. Green looks at the phone, puzzled.
Blue: Wait, give me a second to check on the fruit dehydrator stream.

Blue turns to look at Green as Green's confusion deepens.
Green: What kind of a person live streams their food dehydrator?
Blue: We do.

Green settles right next to Blue as Blue shows him something on his phone.
Blue: I set up a webcam feed on it to keep an eye on our fruit drying while we're out.
Green: Ooh, clever.

Both of the foxes pause, looking at the phone.
Green: "Two viewers." Why is somebody watching our fruit dry?
Blue: I have no idea.

A Twitter thread by Vanessa Guerrero (username @nessguerrero), which reads as follows:

Living in LA, I’ve lived in many a neighborhood in which police helicopters circle all day and they don’t do anything except be loud an annoying.
You know what improved the morale and safety of my neighborhood in less than two weeks?
A new taco stand. I’m 1000% serious.
In general Street food vendors on a block means more pedestrian foot traffic round the clock, if they’re open late, that’s more eyes in a neighborhood. Additionally in an area with many dark empty storefronts, literally adds light and vitality to the area.
More of the neighborhood is meeting each other waiting in line for nearby tacos. I met people three houses down I didn’t know. It feels like we’re all only now getting to know each other, over a torta and some soda.
City planners had left the area in disrepair. The vendors literally CLEANED THE BLOCK. THEY PICKED UP TRASH THE CITY NEGLECTS.
I’m serious when I say in the area they posted up, it’s markedly cleaner. This is not the work of the local waste removal services. This is taqueros.
They also posted up at a bus stop and out open until 2am. Meaning people waiting for a bud stop are not longer waiting alone in the dark. There’s a noticiable air of camaraderie, safety and enthusiasm.
Street vendors did more for our neighborhood than the city ever did.
So the next time you see the elote guy, thank him for his service. He’s doin’ a whole lot more than selling corn.

okay I’ll say it nicer:

australia was colonised according to the myth of terra nullius (or empty land). ever since the very early days of colonialism, the land has been framed as something untameable and unliveable. this has justified acts of violence against the first peoples here, in that they are seen as non-people. it has justified the destruction of sacred land in the goal of making australia look more european. (an example: our capital city contains a man-made lake that is now nothing better than a fetid carp pond. it’s disgusting and unnatural). basically, the idea of “taming australia’ has justified endless harm

“everything in australia is weird and dangerous” is not just some silly meme phrase, it is something that arcs back to the very beginning of white settlers laying claim to ‘australia’. and personally I am very sick of seeing it thrown around like it means nothing

a sidewalk with a curb cut in it.
there are multiple people who are using equipment with wheels. like a bike, a baby stroller and a cargo dolly.

This is a friendly reminder that none disabled people often do benefit from the same accommodations disabled people benefit from.

I’m about to save you thousands of dollars in therapy by teaching you what I learned paying thousands of dollars for therapy:

It may sound woo woo but it’s an important skill capitalism and hyper individualism have robbed us of as human beings.

Learn to process your emotions. It will improve your mental health and quality of life. Emotions serve a biological purpose, they aren’t just things that happen for no reason.

1. Pause and notice you’re having a big feeling or reaching for a distraction to maybe avoid a feeling. Notice what triggered the feeling or need for a distraction without judgement. Just note that it’s there. Don’t label it as good or bad.

2. Find it in your body. Where do you feel it? Your chest? Your head? Your stomach? Does it feel like a weight everywhere? Does it feel like you’re vibrating? Does it feel like you’re numb all over?

3. Name the feeling. Look up an emotion chart if you need to. Find the feeling that resonates the most with what you’re feeling. Is it disappointment? Heartbreak? Anxiety? Anger? Humiliation?

4. Validate the feeling. Sometimes feelings misfire or are disproportionately big, but they’re still valid. You don’t have to justify what you’re feeling, it’s just valid. Tell yourself “yeah it makes sense that you feel that right now.” Or something as simple as “I hear you.” For example: If I get really big feelings of humiliation when I lose at a game of chess, the feeling may not be necessary, but it is valid and makes sense if I grew up with parents who berated me every time I did something wrong. So I could say “Yeah I understand why we are feeling that way given how we were treated growing up. That’s valid.”

5. Do something with your body that’s not a mental distraction from the feeling. Something where you can still think. Go on a walk. Do something with your hands like art or crochet or baking. Journal. Clean a room. Figure out what works best for you.

6. Repeat, it takes practice but is a skill you can learn :)

My dad has bees. Today, I went to his house and he showed me all the honey he had gotten from the hives. He took the lid off a 5-gallon bucket full of honey and on top of the honey there were 3 little bees, struggling. They were covered in sticky honey and drowning. I asked him if we could help them and he said he was sure they wouldn't survive. Casualties of honey collection I suppose.

I asked him again if we could at least get them out and kill them quickly, after all he was the one who taught me to put a suffering animal (or bug) out of its misery. He finally conceded and scooped the bees out of the bucket. He put them in an empty Chobani yogurt container and put the plastic container outside.

Because he had disrupted the hive with the earlier honey collection, there were bees flying all over outside.

We put the 3 little bees in the container on a bench and left them to their fate. My dad called me out a little while later to show me what was happening. These three little bees were surrounded by all their sisters (all of the bees are females) and they were cleaning the sticky nearly dead bees, helping them to get all of the honey off of their bodies. We came back a short time later and there was only one little bee left in the container. She was still being tended to by her sisters.

When it was time for me to leave, we checked one last time and all three of the bees had been cleaned off enough to fly away and the container was empty.

Those three little bees lived because they were surrounded by family and friends who would not give up on them, family and friends who refused to let them drown in their own stickiness and resolved to help until the last little bee could be set free.

Bee Sisters. Bee Peers. Bee Teammates.

We could all learn a thing or two from these bees.

Bee kind always.
