I Really Liked That While Ung Wanted An Answer He Was Still Able To Understand That She Just Isnt Fully
I really liked that while Ung wanted an answer he was still able to understand that she just isn’t fully ready to share yet. Especially after we saw the conversation Yeon su had with drunk Ung where she did tell him but he missed the beginning and then dismissed/belittled what he did hear, I don’t blame her completely for holding back (tho I was begging her just to say it lol). It reminded me a lot of when she shared she just wanted a job and to be stable and he was like that’s it?? That’s your big dream, ofc he didn’t say it with a bad intention and he didn’t have the full picture of why she said that but I can’t imagine it felt good for Yeon su to hear that either of those times. It seems like they’re gonna have Yeon Su’s world come crashing down in order for her to open while for Ung I think it was more the pressure/reminder that he had been abandoned combined with the fact that the last excuse to keep Yeon su around him was ending that pushed him to confess and tell her about being abandoned. Regardless, I appreciate that they had her agree to be more open with him and that she took his hand after he held it out, almost like a representation of her finally being ready to start relying/leaning on him when things get hard.
I think I liked that he was able to understand and wait for her to be ready bc that’s something I do with my friends when I know they’re going through something but aren’t ready to talk about it. It felt realistic and rather healthy of the relationship too. Forcing her to answer him I think would have created a bigger gap and I’m glad that in some ways his talk with her grandma filled this gap for him so that he could be more understanding of why Yeon su is so afraid to give an honest answer to his question.

THEY’RE SO IN LOVE AND HAPPY AND GIDDY AND CLINGY AND TOUCHY AND SO SO SO CUTE.
Our Beloved Summer - Favourite Scenes So Far
It’s very rare that I don’t get bored of love stories, but then it’s also very rare that I get to see angsty love stories without any level of toxicity / misogyny / either lead being frustrating.
OBS writer has nailed the angst in the love story, Kim DaMi and Choi Woo Sik have nailed the angst in their acting.
Kook Yeon-Su and Choi Ung clearly are not over each other, because no one wanted the break up in the first place. From their relationship shown neither hurt each other until the final breakup. The other bits were banter in the relationship or the times when we say things we don’t really mean to and apologise in a way that our partner gets us. It doesn’t have to be the set standard - like Pyo MiSeon said in Hometown Cha Cha Cha, “There is no manual for dating”.
From what we have seen so far, Yeon-Su delivered the break-up verdict owing to her own insecurities, inferiority complex and circumstances that she got burdened with. Ung as we all know, believes in running away from problems - so he is not the one to confront or take the bull by the horns. And guess that is where the gap was - these two won’t talk to each other about the actual problems because it’s not their nature to confront. And if a relationship needs to overcome these pitfalls, we all know communication is the key.
And so was it a surprise that when they finally decide to face their feelings that it led to two scenes that made you feel their pain - their pain of not being with each other and wanting to be with each other , wanting to forget the reasons that caused their breakup.
This scene at the end of episode 6 is what left me in awe of Choi Wook Sik’s impressive acting to pull off the angst - the pining, the pain, the hurt, he just wanted to hear from her - to know if she had hurt as much as he had, some kind of affirmation that she was as much in love with him like he was, that losing him hurt her as much as it hurt him to lose her. The pain in those lines was evident - sure we can’t be together, but why can’t we be a part of each other’s lives as acquaintances, be cordial like we are with others. It hurts to let go, even after these 5 years it still hurts and you are the only one with whom I can share this pain with , because no one else will get it.

And I thought, it would be tough to beat this scene - the pain in Choi Woo Sik’s voice and eyes and Kim Da Mi breaking down in silence, the way her head fell and tears started to flow. That was a scene I will never forget.

But like I have said before, these two are immensely talented and bright young actors and me a mere viewer, how could I think they won’t deliver a scene that would beat this one. Again it was the last scene of episode 11 - Ung is by himself coping with a trauma we don’t know of - of seeing his loved ones walk away from him without telling him why - not once but twice. So this time when life has given a second chance, he is going to grab it and not run away like he would. Yeon-Su knows she is still in love with him and always has been, she is going to get over her insecurity of wanting to hear from him first , she will take charge and not walk away this time, she will find him and tell him what she feels. So she finds him all by himself and says she doesn’t want to be friends anymore and he pours his heart out - how much he has missed her and all he wants in his life is for her to love him. And Da-Mi again doesn’t need words to express Yeon-Su’s happiness, she just nods silently with tears flowing.

The pain and happiness - how can this co-exist for these two ? The brilliant level of acting displayed by Choi Wook Sik and Kim DaMi that pierced right though my heart. This happens rarely, especially since I don’t believe in people getting back together after breakups. That’s why I love KDramas - they are relatable but they also convince me of stories and relationships that I wouldn’t be convinced of in my real life.
Our Beloved Summer is a simple tale of two individuals growing together and learning to love and I’m in for the last ride.
