How about... Shiro and Keith were voice actors together. Pining Shiro ends up having anonymous phone sex with a man who, impossibly, gets Keith’s character voice just right. He’s hooked.

Shiro had been barely making it as a voice actor. When he landed a lead role for a popular American adaptation of an anime, it not only made his career but earned him some of the very best friends he’s ever had. When it’s all over, he has one regret: that he never confessed his feelings for his breathtaking costar, Keith.

It’s been a year since the final episodes aired, and though the whole crew still stays in touch, Shiro misses the way he and Keith had become especially close in those years. He let the moment pass him by, and now he has no idea what to do with these feelings that seem to only ache more with time. 

Not only does Shiro secretly ship their characters together (nbd, Akira/Takashi was the most popular pairing, after all), but he spent years pining after Keith. Even now, he rewatches the old episodes and the rasp of Keith’s voice undoes him. It’s the stuff of his deepest, darkest fantasies.

Until he sees an ad for an adult fantasy voice chat service geared toward nerdy ships. There’s even one for Beast King GoLion! Now, maybe that is his deepest, darkest fantasy. Voicing a passionate scene with Akira would easily have him whiting out in no time. Even better if there’s someone who can work the honey-over-gravel tone of his former costar’s voice passably well. It’ll never be the real thing, but maybe if he can just scratch that itch...

Feeling shady but also curious, Shiro signs on as Takashi_tonight, swearing he’ll take this shameful moment to his grave. He posts that he’s looking for Akira, that he has a message only for him. He just wants to live out the fantasy for a few minutes. And who knows: maybe the phone sex will be a decent distraction, something to do rather than moping alone. 

It takes a while for someone to bite, but eventually akiraLovesYouBaby invites him to a private voice chat. 

Shiro’s not at all prepared for the voice that meets him on the line. It IS Akira. It’s perfect, and impossible. And all the feelings he’s worked so hard to bury come rushing to the surface. He’s sure he’s never come so hard in his life, his chest aching with a lot more than desire. The emotion in his voice, it’s unbelievable. 

Who is this guy? Shiro is hooked. And how many times will he have to log into this service, his shameful secret, just for the chance of finding him again?

Picking up with option 3, here’s my idea:

Space whales are benevolent, detached gods. Once an epoch a migration occurs, great herds returning to the source of the universe to spawn. Their mating has a name, long forgotten by anyone living now.

Unsuspecting folks go missing from worlds wherever they pass. Atlas is investigating, as are the Blades. The missing citizens seem to be tributes taken to be tested. That’s what is said, what is known about the mating on the oldest worlds, but to what end no one knows.

It isn’t long before Keith and Shiro vanish just like the others.

Everyone’s on the case, wracked with worry, but it’s Lance who has a theory first. He’s listened to the accounts of the family and loved ones of many of the vanished, connected the dots with a jagged line. There’s a pattern, but it’s... strange. No one will take him seriously. 

They aren’t all lovers who went missing, not exactly, but they all have a history. The kind where people bite off a smile, raise an eyebrow, or glance nervously at their feet. No one wants to say it. Everyone who’s missing is harboring a secret love. More often than not, life got in the way...

I’m going the memory loss route, if that isn’t yet apparent. It’s just too attractive. I wanted something to happen to them that’s more than happenstance, but also less political and more mystical. Our mains have more-or-less been spirited away to the back of a space whale, which is something I’ve ALWAYS wanted to revisit. This isn’t a story about fate, in my opinion. They’ll exercise free will, stripped of all preconceived ideas of who they are themselves, and who they are to each other.

The team can’t get them back until the ritual completes, one way or the other. No one is sure whether to hope this changes everything, or to be more afraid that they’re friends will never be the same.

I wanted to play around with colouring and backgrounds because I really need more practice, and why not use that as an excuse to draw sheith? Them travelling together post-vld is one of my favourite headcanons.

Writing Iverson as a father figure in To Be Vulnerable

My parents were neither great nor terrible. They both had good moments, and both had moments when they sucked. Overall, they were average people with their own baggage, doing an average job of raising kids.

But traditionally, in our sexist society, mothers are viewed as the more nurturing, present, dedicated parents; the heart of their families. In my family, it was the opposite. My dad was far more involved, available, and caring than my mom.

The first chapter of To Be Vulnerable was posted two months after my dad died.

I didn’t set out to write Iverson as a tribute to my dad, and I still don’t think of him as such. There aren’t many similarities between them, and I plan to keep it that way.

What I did set out to do was write a father figure who was believable as a parent, as the primary source of parental love and affection and support. That had been my experience with parents, and I wanted it to be a more visible experience, even if seen through the eyes of fictional characters.

Iverson was still essentially himself: no bullshit, entirely straightforward, with a little (or a lot) of fumbling in personal matters. A little rigid in some ways. But he cared. He gave a shit, and he tried to be the best parent he could be, just like he tried to be the best he could be in other areas of his life.

This worked especially well with Keith, who was already established in canon as having been raised by a single dad before his dad’s death. He would be well primed to accept a male figure as a parent, probably more easily than he would accept a female figure.

And the reader response to Dad Iverson has been pretty huge. <3
