The Pack Initiative - Chapter Eight

We're all seated at the large dining table, the only sounds being utensils scraping against plates and loud slurping from our various drinks.

Jungkook, Jimin and Hoseok were just drinking water out of bottles, but Hoseok had a neon pink straw sticking out of his. It's cute, actually.

It'd be funnier if it was a silly straw, but still.

Namjoon and Taehyung had beers, leisurely taking sips. They're only on their third and second respectively, the empty bottles swept off to the side.

Seokjin, Yoongi and I have coke, plastic tumblers thick with condensation from the ice and cold drinks housed inside it. I can already tell the caffeine is going to keep me up a little later than normal.

Seokjin, Jimin and I had began to make dinner when he was physically pulled from the kitchen by Yoongi. He kept hovering way too close to the stove, arm beginning to turn red from the closeness to the flame. It was a blur of Yoongi grabbing him and shoving him out of the kitchen, lightly scolding him and checking his arm.

Luckily, he hadn't been burnt, and Yoongi replaced him. He tried to assume the role as head chef, but he was soon knocked into his place as sous-chef and didn't fight it.

"So, when are your ruts and heats?" The room goes completely silent, nobody even moving a muscle. Namjoon realises he has rendered the room silent; quickly tapping his pen against the academic diary in-front of him. Hoseok clears his throat, stammering sounds beginning to sound from him.

"Why?" Jungkook asks from beside me, wiping his sweaty hands down his sweatpants before placing one onto my thigh.

"We need a coordinated schedule, especially if one of us is due soon. It's much better to have them all written in the same place for us all to see than by word of mouth." He makes a fair point, and the others seem to recognise that too, but no-one wants to be the first to reveal such an intimate thing. I share a heavy glance with my alpha, watching as he shifts nervously and squeezes my thigh at the same time.

"June and December. Always starts on the eleventh." Taehyung is the one who speaks up first, relaxing into his chair and beginning to play with his hair once he notices everyone's attention is fixed on him. Namjoon scribbles away in his academic diary, nodding hastily.

"Mine fall in February and August. Start on the sixth." Hoseok goes next, moving his head side-to-side and cracking his neck loudly. Ew. Again, Namjoon starts writing. We all look to Seokjin, the last in the pack, but he shakes his head vehemently.

"Don't look at me. That stuff is private!" He sputters, embarrassed from all of the eyes on him. Pity fills me, noticing how embarrassed he looks and how Taehyung's began to open his mouth to speak for him.

"February, May, August and November. They normally start on the seventeenth." I spit out, almost cackling when Jungkook's head flies towards me. His eyes are wide, jaw dropped. The expression is mirrored on Seokjin's face, spluttering noises filling the room once again. Namjoon nods in thanks, quickly scribbling down exactly what I've said. I gently nudge my alpha, eyes searching his. His mouth opens, then closes, then opens again, then closes again. He pleads with his eyes, bottom lip popping into a pout. I sigh.

"Kook's are February and August too. It usually falls around the ninth, but the last one fell on the eleventh." He nuzzles into my shoulder, whispering his thanks. Namjoon, yet again, scribbles away.

We continue like this until everyone's revealed their own, Namjoon annotating the specific dates with two different colours of post-it tabs; green for the alpha's and yellow for the omega's, at least that's what I assume. There's quite a lot of blue ones strewn throughout the thing, more concentrated towards the last few months of the year.

I'm curious. What could they mean? What comes frequently in the winter months? He's an enigma. An attractive enigma, just like everybody else. We're all so secretive in our sub-packs, barely ready to crack our outer shells. But we'll do it one day.

Hopefully soon, or it'll be incredibly awkward when we're moved out of here and into the middle of nowhere with no-one but each-other.
