Midnight Waltz
Bit of a stream of consciousness fic about Decapitron and Leech Woman and things that could have been.
--------------------------
The ballroom was a sacred place. No one went in there. There was no reason to and the surrounding area was in disarray. But to them it was holy. It was pure and untouched and they knew that when they entered that room it would only be the two of them.
The moon was the only light in that room, soft and pale like her skin. It made her silk dress shine so beautifully. The only sound was their feet shuffling on the dusty floor as they danced. They swayed in each other's arms. He held her close. He wanted her close. He couldn't bear to lose her again.
Their time in the ballroom was often somber. They would reminisce. Think about the past. What could have been. If they were left in peace. If he didn't have to run all his life. If she hadn't died. If everything was okay.
Her grip on his hand tightened.
It wasn't fair. Why them? What did they ever do? Why did their lives have to be torn away from them? What did they do to deserve this?
He often wondered what he could have done differently. If he had stopped her, maybe she would have lived. Maybe they both would have lived. They could have lived and died a life of their choosing.
As they turned, the moon illuminated her face and he could tell she felt the same. They both felt guilt and remorse. It weighed heavily on them, yet when they danced it always felt like they were floating, lighter than air. They could float away from it all and live amongst the clouds. The peaceful life they yearned for.
Their dancing slowed, soon stopping. She buried her face into his chest and he held her as tight as he could. They may have lost everything, but they still had each other. They had love. They had friends and hope for a future, even if it wasn't the one that they had planned for.
They had their ballroom and they had their late night dances. They had the moon and the silence.
And even if things could never go back to how they were before, they knew that no matter what, they would always be together.
