Hello! I was wondering if you can give some tips and advices about writing time loops? I've been wanting to do this for a while but I just have no idea how to. I tried searching about it numerous times through google yet I still feel like I have no idea how does it work, especially in a story piece. I hope you can help. Thank you so much!

Time loops are simply one period of time restarting and replaying repeatedly. For characters, they're generally hell, for writers they are a creative challenge. Here are a few steps to start you off:

Know what is causing the phenomenon. It doesn't have to be a good or meaningful reason, but you as the writer need to know what triggered the loop and how to end it.

Decide the rules. Do the characters have any power over the loop? Does it evolve based on their actions or does it always restart exactly the same? Is dying within the loop permanent? Does the loop end at an exact moment every time, or only when the MC dies? Are penalties or rewards for their behavior within the loop?

How does the main character find out? Do they notice immediately or gradually? Does someone else have to tell them? How does that person know? Does everyone know? Once someone knows, how do they go about stopping the loop? Do they experiment blindly or are they given instructions?

There should be a payoff. Yes, being free from a time loop is a positive ending in itself, but what was the point? Was the world changed by the loop? Surely the characters were improved, right? Was someone using the loop to achieve a goal?

I found this article to be entertaining while breaking down your typical time loop storyline. It references numerous examples of time loop stories, pokes fun at the sometimes sill aspects of time loops, and provides a few ideas for how to write one.

Two of my personal favorite examples of time loops are Groundhog Day and the X-Files episode "Monday." I recommend watching those for ideas.
