I had some Thoughts™️ about the series finale of Bad Batch. It was so safe, and so saccharine, and I mayyy start drawing some of the what-ifs that I expected. This is the Tech reunion I was anticipating (which, mad props to them for letting him stay dead, even though I was very sad about it) where he turned out to be that mysterious agent that was after them. This is, however, likely the only “good ending” scene I would draw. I expected to be shattered after the finale, and I wasn’t. So now I’m going to have to break my own heart

I accidentally deleted this post (what's up with tumblr not asking you to confirm it???), so I'm posting it again! (I'm stupid and was trying to do things too quickly 😅

“Where do you think you’re going?”

Rex sighed, his shoulders drooping slightly as he turned to face you. “I have to go, mesh’la,” he explained. “Echo and Gregor called; they’ve got new information about where the clones are being kept. This could be the breakthrough we’ve been waiting for.”

“And you were just going to sneak out without so much as a ‘see ya later, mesh’la’,” you frowned, dropping your voice into a poor imitation of his. “No, you’ll just go and disappear again.” 

“Mesh’la, you know I have to go when I’m called - we talked about this,” he pointed out, scowling.

“You talked, Rex. You did,” you scoffed, your arms crossing over your chest protectively. “You told me all about your responsibilities to your brothers.”

“Exactly, I-”

“What about your responsibilities to me?”

Rex couldn’t answer that. He had his arms chained to your house and his legs to a gunship. At least, that’s how it felt. The hurt hiding behind anger in your voice was tearing him in half.

Your hands dropped to your sides as you finally broke the eye contact you’d been bewitching him with. “I can’t keep having the same argument. I’m never going to be a priority for you, am I?” you said, quickly holding up one hand to add “you know what? You don’t have to answer that.”

You didn’t need to look back up at him to know his gaze was still locked on you; sad, brown eyes taking in each of your movements. 

Rex stood silently watching as you closed the distance between you. Barely looking at him, you pressed a soft kiss to his cheek. 

“Take care of yourself, Rex,” you whispered, flashing a brief, forced smile that didn’t reach your eyes. “And your brothers.”

With that, you turned back towards your door, letting the tears that had been building up behind your eyes finally fall down your cheeks. You swiped at them with your arm as you closed your door behind you. 

Outside, Rex stopped breathing. Simultaneously - somehow - he couldn’t process what had just happened and was processing it all a little too much. 

He couldn’t hear his comm’s repeated pinging, signaling Echo’s arrival on-world. He could only hear your voice, sad, angry, disappointed - sad about him, angry with him, disappointed in him. 

It didn’t take long for his well-used military training to kick in; two casualties, but the mission must continue. 

He fit his helmet over his head, refusing to allow anyone to see the tears stinging his eyes.
