synopsis: unlike himself, tamaki’s significant other is extroverted.

pairing: tamaki amajiki x gn!reader

author’s note: welcome to my first post! i’m new to the tumblr writing format but hopefully you still enjoy this headcannon!

before—

it was no secret that tamaki was introverted.

however, y/n was an extrovert and a well known student at ua. they had a vibrant personality that attracted people while having an interesting quirk, technopathy.

the first time y/n tried to approach tamaki, he turned around to face the wall which confused them a bit. they knew that their classmate was timid, but they didn’t think he’d obviously avoid them.

not letting their first failed attempt discourage them, y/n tried to be a bit more subtle and approach him when he was with mirio and nejire. nejire was one of y/n’s good friends so it wasn’t out of the ordinary for them to approach her.

nejire, who knew of y/n’s crush on tamaki, teased them after they complimented tamaki’s performance during training.

their first one-on-one interaction was when tamaki found y/n out on the roof one day after their class training session. tamaki noticed that they were visibly upset with wet cheeks and a slight frown.

“um, nejire is uh—nejire is looking for you.”

“could you tell her i’ll be there in a little bit?

tamaki’s original action was to do exactly that but he’d feel bad if he left them alone when they were sad about something.

“are you okay?”

“it’s nothing. i’m just upset about my performance during training. i sucked. i’m surprised i’m even in the hero course. i’ll get over it and work harder. i’m fine.”

“er—for what it’s worth, i thought that you uh—you did good during training.”

“thank you, amajiki-san. you did well as always.”

their interactions after that were more frequent with tamaki sometimes actively seeking y/n out. y/n was hanging around the big three a lot more now that tamaki interacted with them. however, he was still nervous around them and would sometimes trip over his words.

y/n’s crush continued to grow as they spent more time together and decided to make a move despite not know if tamaki felt the same for her.

“do you want to hang out after school? just us?”

“are you… are you like asking me out?”

“yeah! i know you don’t like big crowds and stuff so i was thinking we could get take out and watch a movie or something at my house. you don’t have to agree obviously! we can just stay friends!”

“can i choose the movie?”

“yeah!”

“okay.”

after—

y/n being outgoing complimented tamaki’s timidness well.

subtle pda. y/n respected tamaki’s space and comfortability, so they didn’t initiate pda very often. tamaki would tell them that’s it’s okay for them to hold his hand or arm but they knew they drew a lot of attention to themselves and didn’t want to put tamaki in that position.

the two already had attention on them because of how unexpected it was for them to be together.

an overly-excited talker and a willing listener.

y/n is extremely defensive about tamaki and tamaki often has to calm them down when somebody does something that they don’t like.

tamaki is clingy in private. tamaki seeks comfort from y/n and they are more than willing to give it to him.

mirio is proud that tamaki was able to build a relationship with y/n despite him being slightly socially challenged.

y/n was a burst of energy and dominated most social situations so they usually did most of the talking when it came to people asking about the nature of their relationship.

tamaki offered y/n the reassurance that they sometimes needed. y/n admired tamaki for his physical abilities and often complimented him, hoping to reassure him as well.

hushed whispers and giggles exchanged between the two during social events.

their thing was flower fields since y/n was a huge botany nerd and tamaki loved butterflies.

"you know, you have petals in your hair."

"mmhmm. i figured."

y/n's love language is acts of service which meant they often made an extra lunch in case tamaki wanted it or they would offer their help if tamaki needed it. y/n even took care of the minor wounds that tamaki may have gotten during training and brought tamaki's mood back up after he felt discouraged.

y/n's optimism is surprisingly one of tamaki's favorite things about them. mostly because it comes hand-in-hand with his favorite thing about them, their smile.

the two don't fight much. maybe petty arguments about an answer on an assignment but never full blown arguments.

in tamaki's mind, he fell for them first. he wouldn't tell y/n that because they would say otherwise but tamaki was pretty certain of himself.
