I'm taking highschool Chemistry this year as I'm only in the 10th grade. I'm really bad at chemistry (I had Intro To Chem this past year and I did really bad) and I was wondering how I could do better. I wanted to prepare this month before school starts but I don't have any proper studying resources and Idk what to do. Help??

Hello bb anon!

I, too, was absolutely not a chemistry person in high school oh my gosh

It really took a good uni professor and actually getting my hands dirty in the lab to develop an appreciation for the subject ヽ(゜∇゜ヽ)

I think the main thing in chemistry, at least general chemistry, is knowing the equations backwards and forwards. ◠ω◕

Depending on your teacher, you might have to memorize the equations, or they might give equations to you on the test.

Either way, it’s pretty handy to have a list of equations handy to help you through the class!

You might not learn all of these; just highlight the ones your teacher goes over as you go through the class, and add equations as necessary:

Equation Sheet Link here!

The other thing in chemistry is practice. If chemistry doesn’t naturally click with you, practice is ESSENTIAL to doing well in the class and getting a feel for the problems! ▰˘◡˘▰

Eventually, after doing enough problems, you’ll be able to skim through a question, look at the variables, and most likely know exactly which equations to use to solve it!

THIS is a website with a number of quizzes ordered by different units/subjects for chemistry!

I would also recommend just googling “quizzes for ____insert current chapter that you are studying____”

Also, during the class, always always do the homework problems that your teacher assigns you! They will likely be very similar to the actual test! In fact, mark the problems that you get wrong the first time and do them each two to three more times. Trust me, this is foolproof ಥωಥ

Lastly, I think the one thing that barred me from enjoying chemistry the first time through is a lack of conceptual knowledge ⊙︿⊙

I am a pretty conceptually-driven person; I like to know why the answer to the problem is that way, instead of just memorizing it.

Some genchem teachers only bother to give you the equations to memorize, instead of really going into why the equation works.

If you are also a more conceptual person (and your teacher isn’t), I would recommend watching videos that explain the concepts you don’t really understand in class!

NOT FREE: Chad’s Videos was what I used for the DAT and BLESS THIS MAN because he explains everything SO WELL and EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE and IT MAKES YOU LOVE CHEMISTRY

FREE: Khan Academy; I’m amazed that this HUGE resource is free because the videos are a+ quality and will help you a lot with concepts you don’t understand!!!

I hope this helps! HMU with how it goes bb;; im looking forward to u having a great year! keep it up, friend!
