In the evening there came a knock at your door. Four gentle raps and you recognised the tune. Ed. He stepped inside your apartment, and you graced him with confusion.
“Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, am I okay to come in?”
The two of you stood in your hallway, plagued in an awkward silence. The corner of his mouth flicking up in amusement. You felt nervous, as though he somehow miraculously knew about the things you’d done the night before with James.
James was (you presumed) back at his own place after having gone to work with Ed. He’d agreed with you when you opened the suggestion of keeping things on the low in relation to Ed knowing about your casual dating. Still somewhere you didn’t know entirely if you could trust James yet. And so Ed being here moved you into a panic.
“Are you okay?” Ed said inquisitively as he walked into your living room, brows furrowed, fronting his entertainment by your nervous disposition.

The real tragedy of modern fandom is that sometime between 2002 and the present day, people stopped reading and enjoying oc x canon fics.
Sometime in the past 20 years readers became convinced that fanfic with an oc main character wasn't 'for' them, was somehow personal to the author, wasn't interesting, wasn't something that you could put your self in.
In the past 20 years people forgot how to treat an "oc" main character like any protagonist and project themselves on them.
There used to be loads and loads of LOTR "12th walker" fics with different oc main characters. People read them! They got comments and interaction! Obviously not everybody liked them but they were way more visibly popular than they are now.
I can point you to my old OC x canon fics from 2002-2006 and they all had like 12 comments per chapter.
Somewhere along the way the idea of empathizing with somebody's oc went out the window and now we have all these 2nd person POV "you x canon" fics instead.
Am I bitter about it?
Yeah. A little.
I can't be dumber than I already am. Bimbo mode engage.

It's important to me that everyone understands that if you've got an autistic friend who periodically sends you pictures/videos/whatever of your Thing, because they know you're into it... They love you.
Now don't get me wrong, It may not necessarily be romantic love, they might not want to run off to a little farm in Montana where you'll be married forever and raise little sheeps...
But they definitely love you. And they're so happy when they spot a post about X and go "ooh, my friend likes X! I'll send it to them!".
Because they love you and want you to be happy.
