In Steven Moffat’s Listen, we learn from a jaunt into Gallifrey’s, and the Doctor’s, past that, had the young First Doctor not passed his Time Lord initiation, he would have been sent to Gallifrey’s army (and I suppose this would be the case of all Gallifreyan children?). I think an implication of the episode is that he would have failed the initiation and become a soldier had he not been visited and given courage by Clara… 

In the late Craig Hinton’s The Quantum Archangel, the Quantum Archangel creates a timeline where the Doctor is an Admiral of the Time Lord army and timeship fleet in a time War parallel and nearly identical to the War in Heaven seen in Alien Bodies and The Taking of Planet 5, with the key difference being the identity of the enemy strongly implied to actually be the Daleks. While the implication of the novel’s passage is that this version of the Doctor is the Sixth, the star of the novel, it never actually asserts it… 

Rachael Stott, comic artist and frequent contributor to Titan Comics’ Twelfth Doctor canon, has been producing images on her own time that demonstrate a very interesting AU for the Whoniverse… 

And… 

… how seriously do I want to canon weld the timeline seen in The Quantum Archangel into a version of reality where the Doctor did fail his Time Lord initiation, was sent to the military academy with the Master, lived their lives in the service of greater Gallifrey, before a dark and terrible War in Heaven, preceded by the machinations of Faction Paradox and the splintering of the Celestis, the screaming and raging enemy of Skaro aiming its angry eye at the Shining World of the Seven Systems, calling the Twelfth Doctor (not the Sixth) to duty? 

Pretty goddamn seriously.
