mae literally meets what can only be understood as god and asks about the meaning of life, to which it replies "that is not a question worth answering" - because of course it isn't. why WOULD an all-knowing cosmic entity try to apply mortal values to EXISTENCE? and it's not like anything it could've said would have satisfied mae anyway. she knows that she, and everyone else, is doomed to be forgotten by time, so having god say something like "don't worry, your existence STILL MATTERS! ^_^" wouldn't have changed anything

because it's not for this distant, unbiased god to decide what's important in the grand scheme of things. it's for mae herself to decide what she believes in. it's up to her to carve meaning out of her actions. it's up to everyone to hold onto the little things that matter to us, because unlike god, we always have something to lose
