many thoughts about Scar in Last Life: part 2, or what happens when you girlboss too close to the sun
Well. I had a lot of fun with the original Scar analysis post, and ever since that post he's only given me even more material to work with. He's so much fun to analyse! (And so I will continue to do so until I run out of things to talk about, which will be never, because I have incurable Monopoly Mountain brainrot.)
I only covered sessions 1 and 2 in the first post, so this will be about Scar being a terrible little man in sessions 3-5.
I ended the original post with the following:
So, all in all, if you’re not scared of Scar in Last Life, you most definitely should be.
And I sure was proven right on that, huh? In session 3, Scar swindles his way back to 6 lives, receiving a life from Ren in exchange for a no-kill pass for Ren. Amongst numerous other things. Honestly, that's not even the most noteworthy part of session 3 for Scar, but it certainly is interesting, so we'll come back to that later. He remains mostly in a truce with Joel and they continue committing crimes as previously, though Scar is certainly afraid of Joel. He doesn't openly fear much, but being murdered by Joel is definitely one of those few things. Scar steals the enchanting table barely minutes after BEST had returned it to spawn, not even bothering to try and hide it this time; he steals it right in front of their faces. He taunts them about it; there's nothing any of them can really do about it! He's completely confident in himself at this point - worst case, he's got a red name living right underneath him. For the rest of the episode, Scar travels the world, selling various wares, including a few magical crystals that are definitely not scams mhm yep. What really interests me about Scar's salesman tactics is that, once again, he shows a total disregard for how anyone else plays the game. Scar isn't like the others - he doesn't concern himself with nether wart, notably. He obtains it during trade, from Bdubs, but immediately puts it back up for sale. He doesn't bother brewing any potions for himself, despite this being a popular tactic with every other faction. Ren then buys the nether wart off him as part of his deal. Similarly, he sells diamonds to Ren as well, despite these being highly valuable resources. He opts to scam players out of their clothes instead of using his own diamonds (which is, admittedly, a tactic which has yet to fail him. He's a ridiculously good con man.) Another item included in the deal between Ren and Scar is, of course, the no-kill pass. Whilst it hasn't been relevant yet (and may not be, because it got burned in lava, and Scar is definitely the type to declare a contract void over something like this), it still interests me. Not because I think Scar wants to try and kill Ren, but because of how smart a deal it was to make. Scar put Ren down to two lives, boosting himself up to six lives. Having already been the boogeyman, Scar had no reason to think he'd be wanting to kill Ren any time soon we've all seen how quickly the tables can turn now, though. But having this pass is insurance for if Ren turns red or is the boogeyman, too; Ren's a man of honour, and isn't going to risk this deal being voided by attacking Scar. This deal keeps Scar safe as much as it does Ren. Scar comes out of this transaction feeling very powerful indeed. Then comes the Southlands' visit to the enchanting table, which of course results in the Yellow Snow fiasco, and Grian and Mumbo's life pre-orders being cancelled. We know how that goes. What I specifically want to talk about here is Scar's reaction to it: throughout the episode, he's narrated with various "wizard business tips", and this moment is no different: "wizard business tip #7: always keep your opponent on their toes by doing the literal opposite of what they expect". I like these tips a lot: they show how self aware Scar actually is, how much he thinks his actions through before he does them. He's unpredictable on purpose, because he thinks he's playing them: he's too overconfident, in this instance. He thinks he can get away without giving up any lives, and they won't hurt the horse - rather, he overestimates Grian's attachment to it. Perhaps because of their shared attachment to a certain llama last season. Either way, Scar has had far too many successes this session, and it is not doing wonders for him maintaining a healthy ego.
I would say that he ended the session as the most powerful player on the server, having the most lives, but this is... not quite true. In focusing so much on trade, especially trading lives, Scar severely underestimated the value of allies. He completely neglects forming any; in fact, in his hubris he antagonises two yellow names, by calling off Mumbo and Grian's soul preorders (notably, Grian, who has already proven he holds grudges. See: Bdubs). So whilst he may appear to have all the power, with six lives and a red life living just underneath him, Scar is walking a dangerous line by the end of session 3.
Session 4, on the other hand, sees Scar's arrogance rewarded, for the most part. He resolves to become the server's "arms dealer", whilst also trading in lives. In the early part of the session, the primary point of interest for Scar is his deal with Bdubs. He agrees to trade Bdubs the enchanter in exchange for a life, and somehow manages to convince Bdubs to give him the life when he doesn't even have the enchanting table on him. This puts Scar on seven lives; far more than any other player has, in particular the red name living at the base of his mountain. He then attempts to double-cross Bdubs by trying to sell the enchanter to other players, even running across Bdubs again in the process and lying to his face about him still looking for the enchanter even though he literally has it in his hotbar at the time. Scar is a businessman through and through, attempting to maximise his profits on the enchantment table (he does at least swear he'll give Bdubs the life back if he gets a better deal) and sowing discord between the other players at the same time. When attempting to sell the enchanter to Jimmy, Scar tries to encourage him to turn red and leave his friends - he later says he was trying to turn Jimmy against the Southlands. Successfully? Absolutely not. But did he try? Yes.
Scar is, evidently, much more interested at this time in breaking others' alliances rather than his own. Not much longer after this (after a brief interlude of finally stealing some nether wart for himself), Scar meets Mumbo and informs him about his pre-order cancellation - again, proving he is not prioritising forming alliances at this time, and is in fact throwing away opportunities to do so ever since the end of Magical Mountain. Which, to be fair, is a consistent character trait of his. The only time in 3rd Life that he mentioned forming an alliance was him asking Grian to take over the desert with him at the very start of 3rd Life, which Grian declined until his life debt to Scar - Scar has never really been one to take stock in his relationships with other people. He survives by scams and mischief and bizarre luck. I also do want to take note of the fact that even though nobody trusts Scar, Grian and Mumbo were more than willing to betray their friends for an alliance with him: people want the power that he holds, though it is all for their own personal gain rather than any loyalty to Scar specifically. Unfortunately for them, Scar's businessman sensibilities mean that he's always trying to maximise his profits, and for him alliances just don't happen to be worth all that much.
He does eventually give the enchanter to BEST, and what I really like about this scene is that BEST come away from it highly impressed by Scar; they wonder if perhaps they've misjudged him, that he can be trusted after all, because he did follow through on the deal. It's just really funny to me that they got such a good impression of him from this, completely unaware that he spent all that time trying to one-up their deal. I suppose the benefit of being such a blatantly untrustworthy and chaotic salesman is that when everything you say sounds like you're trying to scam someone, it's hard to identify what the real lies are.
After this comes Grian's encounter with Scar, where Scar voids his soul pre-order. Grian warns Scar that his swindling will make him "very unpopular", which Scar is entirely unconcerned about; he tells Grian that's the reason he has so many lives. Grian puts Scar on his list, but continues to try and convince Scar to change his mind, that he needs friends. Scar is too stubborn, however, and completely ignores him about this. After all, it's all paid off for him so far - why should he, sitting comfortably on seven lives, take advice from a yellow life?
Scar ends his POV before Grian turns red, interestingly, even though he does have an encounter with Grian. Grian's first move after turning red is, of course, to threaten Scar, making a warning in chat that he should have taken the offer (I would have loved to have seen Scar's POV of this, but alas). Grian confronts Scar on Magical Mountain, and here we finally see the cracks in Scar's confidence as he proposes a deal: a full alliance with Grian where Grian can't hurt him, as well as Grian getting him a replacement horse, in exchange for a life. Unfortunately for him, Grian is not willing to take that deal, instead making a snide comment about giving him it on pre-order.
In short: Scar has fucked up.
Session 5 opens with him realising the rather dire situation he's in, showing off his new contracts. The contracts stipulate that the person receiving the life must 1) not harm Scar 2) defend Scar and the Wizard Hut Alliance 3) give Scar access to their base and resources - essentially, it's a refined version of the deal he offered Grian, but now binds that person to him in writing. It's very clever: it carries a lot of advantages for Scar, and people are so desperate to get back to yellow that it's still a fair deal. Scar admits that he's looking for friendship and allies, having been rather lonely the last few sessions, and also that he lied about not caring about Yellow Snow (which we knew, but it is nice to see him actually be upfront about this).
He wanders the server for a while, eventually winding up at the Snow Fort to advertise his new business. Not much of note happens here until he's about to leave, which is when he just can't resist his chaotic side any more and tries to burn the dark oak tree. In his defence, Etho really wrote a sign saying "Do Not Scar" and expected Scar to just leave it alone. That's on him. But this is an important moment; it provides Etho with a motive. Scar, meanwhile, makes his way over to the Southlands, and of course narrowly escapes a painful death in their traps. It's a bit of a miracle that he survived that, really, and makes for some great foreshadowing; especially when one considers that Scar then attributes it to having his magical crystals in his inventory, and proceeds to give away three crystals (Luck, Escape and Boogey Detection) to Mumbo.
And from then on? It's all downhill.
After some more problem-causing in the Snow Fort and annoying the red Crastle gang, Scott and Pearl take enough pity on Scar to warn him about a potential trap and become kind-of friends with him, finally. He makes the deal with Etho to give Bdubs a life in exchange for the enchanter, thinking he's scored himself an ally (he'd rather have had Etho sign it, probably, but a contractually obligated ally is a contractually obligated ally). Unfortunately, there are two people on the server who are better than Scar at scheming, and Etho is one of those two. Etho completely outwits him: he gets a life for Bdubs, cures himself of the boogeyman curse and takes the enchanter back, all in one go. It's a genius move - and, again, it's very ironic that this happens after Scar gives away his luck, escape and boogey detection crystals. Whilst Etho does eventually sign the contract as well, Scar is still very shaken by this ordeal, and it's only the first stage of his misfortune this session.
Scar logs back in from a break to find the remaining three reds waiting for him, and Cleo signs his contract without question. Joel and Grian, on the other hand, choose to threaten him first, building an entire trap to force him into giving them each a life. However, in doing so they forgot to account for one thing: this is Scar they're dealing with. It not only takes them several minutes to get him to even understand what the trap does, Scar then plays the situation as though he's entirely in control, despite being under threat by two very desperate reds. He runs off to grab his ender pearls from Etho, comes back and nonchalantly says he needs a few more minutes to draft up the contract, as if he's the one with the power in this situation. He gives Joel and Grian a life each (they then realise how thoroughly they've been swindled into allying with him), putting all three of them onto yellow: that makes five lives lost already.
A happy reunion between the ex-reds and their alliances occurs, and people seem generally very grateful to Scar - he's generously cured the server of all red names, and took the fall by being the session's boogey kill. He's made the server (comparatively) safe again. But... did Scar really have such noble intentions? Does he even actually care that there are no longer any red names? I would argue no, not particularly; he hardly even speaks during this whole ordeal other than to remind Joel and Grian of their contracts. He's not at all interested in being the "hero" of the server (really, his antagonising of BEST in session 3 proved that).
If anything, Scar feels useless on yellow. Without any lives to bargain with, and with the enchanter stolen, Scar has nothing to his name other than his contracts: as established previously, Scar has neglected all other kinds of resources like nether wart. He's no longer the powerful dark green wizard of the North, no longer dealing in lives. So what does he do? He once again returns to the Snow Fort, to demand the return of the enchanter.
From Scar's POV, nothing seems amiss during this conversation. He just demands his enchanter be returned to its supposed rightful owner, and is told that Skizz now has it. From Etho's, though? We see a lot more - including three very interesting lines that Scar chose to cut.
"Etho, I will straight up give a life right now, and blow this place up as a red life. Where is the enchanter?"
"If I gave you a life right now, I would blow this place up. I don't know if you know, but I've got a lot of TNT."
"I am vastly considering killing myself and destroying the server right now."
...Hm.
So, moving onto Scar's final visit to the Southlands; I don't think I need to recount what happens here in much detail. However, with the full context of that scene with Etho and Bdubs, doesn't it change a lot? From a rather tragic accident where Scar's carelessness and impulsivity gets the better of him, to Scar deliberately going red, because he sees no value in being a yellow life, and if anything has an incentive to be red. We don't know for sure, of course, but I for one do not think it was a pure accident; he knew perfectly well that those pressure plates were dangerous. He fell into the trap previously, he was warned ahead of time, he was standing safely on the other side until he suddenly rushes forward straight into the trap. I also think that, as a great storyteller, cc!Scar saw an opportunity for a fantastic way to end a session, and he took it. It's not out of the question to think he'd be willing to give up a life to set a plot in motion. Either way, from Scar's POV, it's a cliffhanger ending, as everyone's voices fade out, leaving only the ominous repetition of the pistons that killed him.
Grian's POV adds a little more to the ending: he's able to recover some of Scar's gear, including two of the contracts (Bdubs and Joel's). Despite Grian's contract not surviving, he chooses to honour it anyway, being a loyal person, and heads to Magical Mountain to return Scar's items. The episode ends there, with a "To be continued" on the end screen - for the first time in Grian's entire series - and despite Grian telling the Southlanders that he'd return in a few minutes. So... just what happened on that mountain? The world may never know. At least not until next Tuesday.
Until then, I will leave you with the same words that I began this with:
So, all in all, if you’re not scared of Scar in Last Life, you most definitely should be.
But for very different reasons now.
