I love hearing about the work Justin's put into making sure he and his character are respectful towards the Native land, language and traditions. (And what a cute story about the friend's boy!)

WIndy recap! Another great episode! I love how the show keeps building on itself so that each episode is better than the last and the momentum/story keeps going rather than each episode differing in quality. This show really took off the ground running with the writers and actors not needing anytime to find their footing.

I love how Kate and Abby’s dynamic is visibly different than Abby’s dynamic with Hoyt and Calian. You can tell that Abby is a little more at ease with Kate because she’s a fellow woman, and their friendship is so soft and lighthearted. Really loved getting to see Kate’s Pinkerton side come out in full force this episode. She’s a smart lady, and not afraid of asking the tough questions. And Abby’s emotional journey was so good this week! Finally coming to terms with what was hinted in the pilot: she doesn’t actually know her husband and is flying just as blind with him as she is with Tom Davidson. I also loved that we learned a bit more about Liam. His nickname had me thinking he was Irish American/Catholic, but his marriage with Abby had me unsure since the Irish and Catholics were very much on the outside of society at this point in history. Abby’s father not liking him and them running around in secret confirms for me that he was Irish Catholic, and her story makes it seem that they didn’t really have that much time together before running to Independence. Liam Collins really could have been anyone, and now we have that mystery on top of the Davidson mystery.

It was so interesting to see Calian outside of his comfort zone when thrust back into business with the Independence sheriff’s office. He can’t trust Gus (and rightfully so!), Gus no longer trusts him, and despite both men still being on the outs with each other there’s no denying they make a great team. And with Tom Davidson, Calian comes across as more like your stereotypical Native American in a western— stoic, distant and a bit alien. The poor guy is being pulled in so many different directions, I can’t wait to see if he finds balance or ends up getting tugged around before finding his peace. I also really want him and Gus to be friends again, but that ball is in Gus’ court. I think Augustus is a bit unwilling to admit that Calian isn’t the only one stepping carefully (kind way of saying being a bit sketchy), and I think he’s just as wary of Abby as he is Sheriff Davidson.

Not a lot of Hoyt this week, but he shined when he was onscreen! I love that rapscallion. His banter with Kate (poor homeless Hoyt), him being the only free agent in town, crashing the raid of the Sheriff’s cabin, Hoyt’s only worldly possessions being a spoon collection, and bonding over train robbery with a stranger (only Hoyt lol). Lots of great comedy from him this week, with a bit of seriousness at the end. Him protecting one of the Hagan’s workers and getting shot (that’s his only shirt!) had me so soft.

Speaking of soft, we got more of soft Sheriff Davidson this week and I am melting! I know I shouldn’t, but I love him. The beginning of the episode when he was telling Abby he would see her later had such married couple vibes. And his friendship with Eli and subsequent inner conflict of needing to leave him behind but still wanting to protect him was so sweet, and really has me questioning Tom. Did his family save him from a rough situation while he was cattle rustling and now he’s indebted to them? Does he really want to try and turn over a new leaf in Independence and be a better man? Are Tom’s actions his own desires, a man desperately trying to keep his past from catching up to him (like everyone else in Independence), or a man acting on behalf of his aunt? And Greg is such a talented actor, I felt like I was feeling everything alongside Tom. Him desperately trying to keep together the delicate balancing act of lawman and former criminal, trying to help Eli while keeping his past far away from his new life, his panic and subsequent grief when he ultimately failed and the cost was the life of his friend. It was all so good. I wonder how his reputation is going to recover from this debacle. The Sheriff aiding and abetting a wanted criminal, and allowing to to escalate to the point of taking captives? Not a good look and not something he can easily sweep under the rug.

I can’t wait for what next week’s episode brings!

Another delightful review! Thank you, anon! Philemon seems to tweet every week that fans should just wait, the show gets even better, and he hasn't been wrong yet!

That would make sense for Liam to be Irish Catholic, and for Abby's family to be opposed to him. The Irish were not liked, well into the 20th century. I also found this snippet about early Irish law enforcement and how many of them got the job:

WIndy Recap! Another Great Episode! I Love How The Show Keeps Building On Itself So That Each Episode
WIndy Recap! Another Great Episode! I Love How The Show Keeps Building On Itself So That Each Episode

This kind of employment is wide open for corruption, so it doesn't surprise me that Liam had secrets.

On a separate note, I think the theme of this episode was about pushing people out of their comfort zones. Calian by working for the sheriff, Tom through his former friend, and even Abby being confronted by Kate.

I also loved Hoyt as the comedic relief, but I hope they don't shoehorn him into that role. I loved seeing his depth in previous episodes.

Tom is now at the top of my favorite characters list. The way he's gone from obvious, mustache-twirling, black hat villain to incredibly complex, emotional, troubled character is truly a testament to the writing team and to Greg!

And for the show as a whole, I love the way WIndy forces the characters to not only question each other, but question themselves. Are they who they want to be? Are their pasts too troubled to overcome? Or maybe it's like Tom said, "Maybe we should all be judged on what we do with today..." No one seems to be immune from the conflicts of their past, but how much of that can they let go in order to build a new future for themselves? Time will tell!

Thank you again, anon for your fantastic review! You always give me a lot to think about (which is why it takes me so long to respond)!

@katicatronica ⁣Oh hell damnit it’s Thursday, hi! Look a television program. ⠀ Kat is dear and beautiful, I am a reasonable marksman and the sheriff is having a well deserved snack because he’s exhausted and absolutely stunning in this episode. For contrast, I spent most of my time weeping over the intricacies of tenderness between men/transformative nature of bravery in femme relationships. (also I got pistol whipped by accident but I was a real toughie about it) #WINDY@thecwwalkerindependence

Oh, Katie called him Honey!!! That's so sweet! (Also, nice boot holster!)
