I Am A Good Person.I Am A Powerful Person, I Don't Believe In Evil.I Think That Evil Is An Idea Created

Digital art of Tommy Coolatta and Benry. Tommy is kneeling holding Benry, who is laying sideways on his lap. Benry is not conscious, with his eyes closed, and his head is slumped against Tommy's chest. He looks otherwise peaceful. He is not wearing his helmet. Tommy is looking off into the distance with a somewhat unreadable expression of remorse and finality. They are sitting in a abstract pool of some kind of bright liquid. The sky or background behind them is dark.

I am a good person. I am a powerful person, I don't believe in evil. I think that evil is an idea created by others to avoid dealing with their own nature. I understand my own nature, good and evil have nothing to do with it.

I didn't know I needed a hlvrai fic from Coomer's pov but it's fucking great

Here to Stay Drabbles: Skeletons

Summary: Will they ever figure out if the skeleton Gordon saw was a hallucination, or something else?

~

Without power the facility was dark and quiet. The further in they went, the more the air seemed to be that of a long forgotten tomb’s. They were grave robbing! … Sort of. It wasn’t a tomb, just felt like one. Which probably had something to do with how many people had died here. They were here to do a little bit of robbing though. Only stuff that should’ve belonged to them but still technically not theirs. Thus they were only sort of grave robbers. Maybe one day they would be real ones. It seemed a fun adventure.

Sans Gordon they were making much better time than even their first trip through. But speaking of that first trip through with Gordon, they were in the part of the facility he’d supposedly seen the skeleton in that no one else could see. Why that mattered enough to slow Harold to stop so he could look around, casting his flashlight along the metal walkways, was a mystery. It was just one of those things that was suddenly important because it was. The time to answer some of the questions surrounding that skeleton had come.

Bubby continued for a bit before slowing and turning to look back at him. “What is it?”

“Do you think that that skeleton Gordon saw the first time we were here is still around?”

Folding his arms over his chest, Bubby glanced around. Before coming back here again for his files, he’d gotten himself one of those fancy miner’s helms, allowing him to cast his light around in the same motion as looking around. Harold would have to suggest they go proper grave robbing later to put it to further use. “I don’t know. Wasn’t that just an hallucination?”

“No.” How Harold knew with such certainty he couldn’t say if asked, it was another one of those things. “It was real. We just didn’t see it.” Gordon had killed it at one point but like with several of their group, death wasn’t final. It had come back and was maybe still around.

Harold could use a Play Cointm for a hint on where to look for more information on the skeleton. … Huh? Normally he couldn’t use the Play Coinstm himself, only Gordon and sometimes Benrey could. Weird. He wasn’t going to dig into the ‘why’ though; ‘why’s sometimes had answers one was better off not knowing. It was just another one of life’s many mysteries.

He looked back up at Bubby. “While we’re here, let’s find out more, shall we?” He used a Play Cointm and the knowledge came into his head. A lab a bit further in, not quite all the way to the lab Bubby had been made in – their destination – but close, a short detour before entering it, would be a good place to look for more information. Normally he’d have said so aloud but he was the one who’d authorized this transaction so… he just resumed walking instead.

Bubby fell in step with him once more. “Did you use a Play Cointm?” Sometimes he had things like Harold did. Seemingly not as often or as strong but it was nice to not be alone. Comforting here for sure because well, it was weird, huh?

“Correct.”

“I thought you couldn’t use them yourself.”

“Normally I can’t. This time something’s different though.”

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

“Hmm.” Other than that, Bubby didn’t respond. He was dropping it. Good. There wasn’t anything to gain from prying at such questions.

~

Once in the proper lab, Harold could use another Play Cointm to know exactly where to look. No need though, it was a fairly small place. Using the port in one of his mechanical arms, he and Bubby plugged and powered on the computers one by one until they found the answers they were looking for.

Black Mesa had summoned a Skeleton King in an attempt to to experiment on it and its minions. The results of which were varied but the basic gist of which was a number of magical skeletons were released into the facility when everything went to shit during the Resonance Cascade. Now wasn’t the time to sort through the whole index to find one that might’ve been the one Gordon saw. But the presence of magic skeletons was all they really needed to know to draw the conclusion that one of them had most likely haunted Gordon for a while.

“Damn,” Bubby said as he looked up from the monitor. “I guess Gordon isn’t crazy after all.”

“No. I do believe he is crazy, just not hallucinating skeletons kind of crazy.” They were all ‘crazy’ after all, weren’t they? Whatever that word even meant. It was certainly used a lot to describe Harold so he at least must be. “We should bring this back for him.”

Bubby sighed. “Yeah, probably we should. Why were they summoning skeletons anyway? I thought this place was all about science. Isn’t magic the opposite of science?”

“I don’t think they necessarily have to be opposed to each other. Sometimes they seem to intertwine, in fact. Gordon’s gun hand for example isn’t scientifically possible and yet exists and functions like a proper gun anyway. And it was made based off scientific research Darnold had done on regeneration.”

“Fair point. Let’s pack up and get going already. I don’t wanna be here any longer than we have to.”

~

[A/N] In case anyone is unaware the 'Skeleton King' thing is referring to the ones on some of the TF2 Halloween maps. Just putting this here in case anyone doesn't know.

I loved "Wevertf Benrey is" but your fics with the other's pov are so original and in character it's fantastic. You really capture their personality and mannerisms well. Bubby is so underated and so is his friendship with Benrey so it's nice to see them interact and stay friends post rescas

Here to Stay Drabbles: Cursed

Summary: If it interests you to write about, I've been wondering how Benrey's relationships with the rest of the Science Team have been since things have calmed down.

[A/N] I decided to focus on this relationship with Bubby because in WeverTF Benrey Is, they end up having a decent amount off screen where it was just the two of them hanging out.

~

Bubby was cursed. Black Mesa had cursed him. Perhaps ‘cursed’ wasn’t the right word but it was the word he was using because he liked it better than whatever the alternatives might be. The only job he’d ever had had been at Black Mesa. He’d been quite literally made to work there. They hadn’t even paid him at first until he’d demanded it. They’d given in after only token push back because it was the easiest route to make him settle down. And now apparently he couldn’t work anywhere else because he was only suited to work at Black Mesa.

Calling Harold to complain was tempting and he would do so later. But Harold still worked for Black Mesa. Which was fine; working for an evil organization didn’t make him evil and with how small the company now was and with Gordon in a high position within it, the amount of evil it could do was limited. So there was no ill-will there. It did make him hard to complain to sometimes though because he was involved with the thing Bubby wanted to bitch about.

So instead of calling Harold, Bubby flopped on the motel bed and pulled out his phone to call Benrey instead. Normally they chatted via text but complaining just didn’t feel the same when typing or texting.

Benrey picked up on the third ring. “Yo, what’s up?”

“They fucking fired me.”

“Ooh, really? What’d you do?”

“Why are you assuming it’s something I did? Maybe the higher ups at NASA are just fucking idiots, huh? They are by the way. Every single one of them is a moron.”

“Yeah, okay, sure. But what you’d do?”

“Remember how they wouldn’t let me be an astronaut despite being more than qualified for the job?” They hadn’t even fully believed Bubby on his genius, only letting him in at the lowest rank based off his paper credentials. Most of which had been forged but that hardly mattered. “Well, they were getting ready to fire a rocket into space. Two guys were supposed to go up with it. I knocked one out and took his place. They caught me like an hour before take off because I didn’t tie him up tight enough and he woke up, escaped his bindings and the janitor’s closet I’d locked him in. And then he ratted me out like a bitch.”

Benrey cackled at the other end.

“It’s not funny. … Okay maybe it’s a little funny but it would’ve been funnier if they hadn’t found out until I was already in space. They tried to arrest me so now I have to hide from the cops in a shitty motel.”

“Maybe steal the whole rocket next time?”

“Probably not happening.” Bubby could do a lot but he was out here alone. Plus, even if he somehow managed to steal it and get himself up into space, it’d be a massive pain. “Coming out here was a mistake.”

“Huh? Why?”

Lots of reasons. He’d never been so alone before and the long distance thing he was trying with Harold was stressful. They’re relationship was open and somewhat casual but it was still strained by the distance. Which was perhaps another reason Bubby had called Benrey instead; being the only two not working at Black Mesa meant they hung out in person fairly often but still, a lot of their conversations were through the phone. Most of all though; “I’m not fit to work anywhere other than Black Mesa. They cursed me.”

“But you’re like smart and stuff, right? Shouldn’t you be able to get a job anywhere smarty-pants people get jobs?”

“I can’t prove I was created to be smarter than everyone else without causing all sorts of other problems for myself.” He wasn’t against spilling Black Mesa’s secrets but doing so would also lead to him being an object of scientific interest. “I have to forge college degrees and past work experience or whatever ‘cause I’m too old to be brand new to this stuff.” And he couldn’t make any of his fake past too impressive lest someone decide to dig too deep to verify his credentials and thus find out he was lying about it. “I could get real college degrees but… I don’t want to.” It’d be boring; he already knew everything any course could try to teach him. And no doubt he’d have to put up with a bunch of inane side bullshit along the way too.

“Huh? Guess that makes sense. So what’cha gonna do then?”

“Move in with Harold, I guess.” He couldn’t afford to keep living on his own if he didn’t have a steady stream of income. “After that, I don’t know.”

“Could uh… get a non-smartypants job. Gordo told me the other day that sometimes people pay money for other people to take pics of stuff they want pics of. It’s like an art form or something, I don’t know. Sounds easy though, huh? Maybe you could save up enough to get a rocket and go to space by yourself.”

Bubby took a breath to shoot the idea down but… actually, while buying a rocket wasn’t happening, building one was maybe more possible. Most of his friends worked at Black Mesa after all, they could snake him the parts that couldn’t be bought as well as the fuel. He was fully capable of designing a one man rocket – or perhaps a two man rocket if Harold wanted to come with him – that could at least reach orbit if not go all the way to the moon. He’d probably need help actually physically building it but Harold would surely be willing to lend his strength. Still an absolutely absurd idea that would probably fall apart at some unforeseen point in the process but it was fun to think about. So… “You know what? Maybe I will.”

“Woo! I’m on a roll with good suggestions lately.”
