Jealousy and possession in the romances of Star Wars

I’ve seen a lot of concern recently about Rose acting jealous of Rey in the novelization. I get it.. no one wants to see a Rey-Rose cat fight.

But guys, I’m convinced that it won’t happen, and that we Reylos and FinnRosers shouldn’t be worried in the slightest. Why?

Jealousy, or its darker twin, possessiveness, are hallmarks of Star Wars romances. They’ve always been there. Further, although possessiveness is bad for relationships, a little jealousy can actually be a good thing.

Before we get started, some warnings: A) this meta is heavily Reylo focused, because of course, and B) it discusses Kylo’s jealousy and possession as the direct result of his primal drive and desire to have sex with Rey.

Look away if you’re uncomfortable with aggressive / primal sexual themes, or if you’re underage.

If you were bothered by my hunger meta, I do not recommend reading this. I love constructive criticism, but please read responsibly, my dears. If you find primal sexual hunting themes upsetting, this is NOT the meta for you.

Still with me? Before we get to the good stuff 😏, let’s take a walk down memory lane.

on “Your greatest weakness” and themes of generational sacrifice...

I’m finally able to re-watch certain bits of The Last Jedi, and I had a thought just now while I was watching the shirtless Force-bond scene which I am sure I am not the first person to point out, but here I go anyway.

The dialogue in question is as follows:

Rey: Why did you hate your father? Give me an honest answer. You had a father who loved you, he gave a damn about you.

Ben: I didn’t hate him.

Rey: Then why?

Ben: Why what? Why what? Say it.

Rey: Why did you… why did you kill him? I don’t understand.

Ben: No. Your parents threw you away like garbage.

Rey: They didn’t.

Ben: They did. But you can’t stop needing them. It’s your greatest weakness, looking for them everywhere… in Han Solo, now in Skywalker. Did he tell you what happened that night?

Rey: Yes.

Ben: No. He had sensed my power, as he senses yours. And he feared it.

Rey: Liar.

Ben: Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to. That’s the only way you can become what you were meant to be.

So there’s three things going on in this exchange which are really important, and they all interweave.

The first is that this is consistent with what we know of Ben’s function as truth-teller to Rey. His words basically exemplify the axiom of Do you want to hear a painful truth, or a comforting lie? Ben Solo consistently offers Rey painful truths. And Rey acknowledges these things to be true–particularly the things having to do with her family. He’s right, and it’s painful, but painful truths are what’s necessary for each of us to grow.

That’s the first, surface-level thing that’s going on here. Rey demands an honest answer of him, and he seemingly refuses to give it to her, and instead, turns it around to her as an opportunity to be her mirror, reflecting back that painful truth.

But there’s more going on here.

And I believe that he actually does answer her question here. Quite explicitly, in fact.
