Maybe i should watch the anime after all?
It’s incredibly important to me that the anime decided to include this scene that wasn’t in the manga. In the manga, Maomao does pass out in Jinshi’s lap after saving him from what was obviously an assassination attempt.

HOWEVER, the manga cuts off at this point, keeping strictly in Maomao’s perspective, and cuts straight to when she regains consciousness in bed after being treated for her injuries. The manga doesn’t show how she got back. They SAY how, and she briefly mentions, “wow that must have been embarrassing; he carried me back,” but we don’t SEE it. We don’t get to feel the true impact of what that means. But the anime DID show us, and holy shit.

They SHOW us how taboo this is. They show Jinshi carrying her out of the temple, after a public attempt on his life.

They show us the shock and horror on Lakan’s face as Jinshi silently walks past him. Horror at the state his daughter is in, horror at another man—a man with a status he could never dare to question—staking such a public claim over his child, horror at the fact that he could never have this level of closeness with her (as Maomao would never allow it).

Everyone hides their gazes, as is their custom when someone of his rank passes by, but the air is different this time. Jinshi is furious, he’s terrified, and he could not give a single shit about how inappropriate it looks to these palace officials.

The shot that slowly follows her trail of blood—even though it’s a small detail—that in particular leaves such a intense impression of how poignant this is for him.
Maomao talked about this scene in the manga like it was nothing to her. She did what she set out to do: she saved the person who was targeted by the attack. She didn’t even know the target would be someone she knew. But she has no idea that this happened afterwards as a result of her bravery. To her, it likely wasn’t even an act of bravery at all. She acted on impulse; she did what she knew was the right thing to do.
The anime didn’t need to include this, because the manga didn’t show it. But damn, I’m so glad they did.
At this point og bsd is more traumatizing than beast
Hi 👀 “You’re not in bed. I came looking for you.” + kunichuuzai?
hihi! Slowly working through all the wonderful prompts I've been given<3
"You're not in bed," Chuuya says, rubbing their eyes. "I came looking for you."
Dazai doesn't say anything, moving their head back to stare out the window. Raindrops hit the glass, sliding down, disappearing into the night. Dazai wonders why they can't do that, too.
"'Samu."
A hum vibrates against Dazai's lips but they don't move. There's a sigh and then footsteps, and Dazai thinks maybe they've finally managed to push Chuuya away for good, just like they deserve, just like they wa--
Dazai bites their lip so hard it bleeds.
Then, just barely, Dazai makes out two sets of footsteps. "'Samu."
It's a different voice this time, less groggy, but still softened by sleep. Dazai peels their forehead from the window to look over. If they had a working heart, it might squeeze at the sight. Kunikida stands there in an oversized sweater and boxers, arms crossed. Next to him is Chuuya, wearing Dazai's shirt that hangs off of one shoulder and a pair of boxers with dogs on it that Kunikida gifted them for their birthday.
"Go back to sleep," Dazai says, their voice distant in their own ears.
Chuuya is the first one to approach, reaching out slowly and watching Dazai for a reaction. There is none. They rest a palm on Dazai's cheek. "You promised."
Dazai flinches.
There's another sigh and then Kunikida is grabbing Dazai's hand and tracing lines into the exposed parts of their palm. "We also promised."
To be honest with each other. To be there for each other.
Chuuya's eyes are bright and burning, despite the lack of light in the room. Dazai can't bring themself to look away. "It happened too fast," they mumble.
"What do you mean, love?" Kunikida asks, pressing a kiss to the tip of Dazai's index finger.
"I was fine," Dazai says, "and then I wasn't."
Chuuya runs a thumb across Dazai's cheekbone. "Why didn't you wake us?"
"Neither of you sleep enough as it is."
"Osamu, this is more important than that."
Dazai doesn't say anything, turning their head so their lips rest in Chuuya's palm.
"You're more important," Kunikida says. "You understand that, don't you? That you're important to us?"
Dazai is trying to believe it. Months of the three of them learning to fit together has involved many assurances, late nights, and compromises. Tearing down walls has never been easy for Dazai, but they're trying. Believing they are worthy enough to be held like this is even more difficult.
Letting out a shaky breath, Dazai lets their eyes flutter close and nods again Chuuya's hand.
Their partners each kiss a cheek and then stand up, tugging on Dazai's hands. "Come on, love," Chuuya says, "let's go back to bed."
"You can be in the middle," Kunikida says, half a joke, and half a promise of comfort.
Dazai still feels disconnected from the world, from themself, but when they all lay down and there are words being whispered into their pulse points, kisses pressed to their nose and eyelids and palms, Dazai feels like maybe their pieces can be placed back together.

from my sketchbook! it's a week's worth of doodles, when my classes are boooring hehe
