"Okaa-san, what is the meaning of this?" Ran said angrily while slapping a stack of legal documents on her mother's desk.

Eri looked up at her calmly. "These," she said, gathering and organizing the documents that had spilled everywhere, "are the divorce papers I sent your father to sign."

Ran groaned and made a helpless noise. "But... Why?"

Conan looked up her with a sympathetic look. He'd tagged along because he'd been worried about her ever since she'd opened the manila envelope. It had arrived earlier today, and since they were legal documents, Ran to sign for them (Kogorou was out with his drinking buddies). When she saw who they were from, she excitedly opened the envelope, ignoring Conan's protests.

"Otou-san would only procrastinate when he sees they're from okaa-san," she'd explained to him then and he had to admit that she had a point. "I hope it's a change of address request and she wants to move back in," she'd added with a giggle. Conan had given her a flat look; sometimes the delusions she had about her parents worried him.

As did the look on her face once she'd freed the documents. She hadn't said a word to him, instead she'd gotten up and called for a taxi immediately.

Eri interlaced her fingers and put her chin on them. "Ran, it's been over ten years now. Your father hasn't changed for the better at all. No, he's even gotten worse. He's lazy and a gambler and a drunk, and he has no intention to change. I'm so sorry, I should've never left you with him. But the court ruled in his favor due to his position as a police detective."

"But... He cares about you," Ran said quietly and Eri barked a humor less laugh.

"Does he? All he ever does is insult me and the hit on girls your age, right in front of us."

"That's... But... No, but when he does his deductions, he's brilliant, you have to admit that! And so much nicer!"

Eri sighed. "I don't know what happens to him when he falls asleep and becomes The Sleeping Kogorou," she said, her eyes flickering to Conan for a split second. "But that's not Mouri Kogorou. When he's awake, he's awful, and I don't want to be married to him any longer. And I don't want to give up my career and my apartment just to become his live-in servant again."

She got up and rounded her desk, stopping in front of Ran, who'd started trembling slightly. Eri put her hands on her daughter's arms, rubbing softly to calm her down.

"I need to cut my ties to him, for my own peace of mind. And I'd love for you to move in with me. You, too, Conan," she added, smiling at him. "My apartment is closer to both your schools. And I pay someone to come clean once a week. You wouldn't be solely responsible for the housekeeping anymore. In fact, you wouldn't even have to cook at all unless you wanted to. Tomoaki is more than happy to do that."

Ran frowned, blinking away the tears glistening in her eyes. "Tomo...aki?"

Eri smiled and took a step back, leaning against her desk. "Yes. He's the man I've been living with for the past 6 months. He's wonderful, Ran, you'll like him. And don't worry, I did a very thorough background check," she added, chuckling slightly.

Ran stood there, not saying anything, her breathing shallow. Conan reached up and took her hand, and that startled her out of her stupor. "So there's really no chance...?"

"No, and I'm sorry," Eri shook her head. "I know you always wanted your parents to get back together, and I understand that. But sometimes, things are irredeemably broken. I don't love your father anymore, haven't for years. I can barely tolerate being in his presence. And I hate knowing how he treats you. Please consider my offer, it would make me so happy."

Ran swallowed and nodded, and she and Conan left soon after. They decided to walk home, Conan was carrying the divorce papers so that Ran didn't have to.

"Ran-nee-chan, are you okay?" he asked after a long while.

Ran gave a short hum, but stayed silent. She was looking down, her face overcast with shadows of the setting sun, and he couldn't make out her emotions. He wondered if she herself knew what she was feeling.

"What... are you thinking about?" he tried hesitantly.

At that, Ran lifted her head enough for him to see her face, and she gave him a sad but warm smile, eyes still glistening with unshed tears.

"I was just thinking..." She took a deep breath and squeezed his hand that she had been holding this whole time. "How many moving boxes I'd need for all my stuff."

Conan looked at her for a moment, before returning her smile. He made quick calculation in his head. "I think 5 is a good starting point. We can always get more or reuse them."

Ran chuckled and nodded, then she took a deep breath and looked forward with a determined smile.

For the first time in many years, her shoulders, Conan noticed, weren't tense anymore.

I just wanted to write Eri and how she and Ran deserve so much better.

I’ve been waiting a year to post this

Shinichi surprising Ai with a cat.

Ai has been looking after a stray cat for a while now but didn't believe herself worthy of being a pet owner so she never tried to bring it with her back home.

When they disappeared, she assume they had either been found by their owner or the worst had happened.

She was upset for the next week because of it, which wasn't helped by Shinichi being secretive with her once again and dragging Agasa around without her.

Her bad mood reaches a boiling point when Shinichi and Agasa return from one of their secretive trips with something wrapped in a blanket and tells them how she's tired of them not speaking with her and trusting her and demands to know what they've been doing.

But before they can reply, the thing bundled in Shinichi's arm does so for him by letting out a loud meow.

Shinichi unravels the blanket to reveal the stray that Ai had been tending too for a while now and admits that he was the one who took the cat to try and find the owner and when they couldn't, he and Agasa had the cat checked out by the vet to have it's vaccinations and chipped.

To Ai.

"We know how much you care about the cat and with winter around the corner we couldn't just leave it outside," Shinichi says as he tried to hide his embarrassment about being caught out, "So we thought you could look after it."

And then the cat jumps out of Shinichi's arms and into Ai's. It takes her a moment to realise she's crying.

She wants to protest that she wouldn't be a good owner but the cat is nuzzling into her arms and the thought of turning them away just makes her feel bad. So instead she buries her face into the fur of her new cat to hide her tears and smile.
