The thing I think a lot of people in fandom forget is this.
If these characters we love so much are good, quality characters, then they can mean something different to each person. They can have dimension and different impacts on different people. Their role in the story/universe can be something different to each person who interacts with that source material.
Especially characters that aren't the main character, where we may not know a lot about them, (but even main characters can hold different meanings to different people), people can interpret them differently. And that's what makes them magical.
Because one person can look at character ABCD and go "wow. They're such a good representation of struggle and triumph." And another person could look at that same ABCD character and go "god what a pure symbol of hatred and greed and all that is wrong in this universe,"
AND BOTH PEOPLE CAN BE CORRECT.
Because that means the characters are more than just flat images on our pages and screens. They have depth, and they can mean different things to different people, based on their view on the world, their own experiences in the world, etc.
And it's fine to discuss these different viewpoints. It actually can even add even more depth to that character when we discuss this.
But once we devolve into name calling and insults, we actually take away the characters dimension, and shove them into a box. We ruin the character by saying "people who think that ABCD is greedy clearly need to touch grass and go to therapy and [etc. Etc] Because they're actually [etc. Etc]" we ruin those characters for ourselves and everyone around us.
And that is why I try to stay out of fandom discourse. Because it just devolves into people trying to police how others view their little blorbo. Their precious meow meow.
And I'm not guilt free of this. I've certainly gotten caught up in heated arguments and tried to force my views on characters on others. Nobody is perfect. We all can get heated when it comes to our blorbos.
But if we could all be a little more self aware and just enjoy the characters for their different levels, I think we'd all be a bit happier.
