Dragons are henceforth a feminist icon. You’re no longer allowed to participate in the appreciation of dragons and dragons in culture unless you’re totally down for helping the equality movement.

Once upon a time there lived a sultan whose nation was vast and wealthy. He was a man blessed by the gods, having two healthy, obedient sons and one sweet, beautiful daughter. The daughter was named Eshana and this is her tale.

When she was sixteen, her eldest brother, who was very wise and talented with the magical arts, offered his sister anything he could give her for her birthday. Eshana sweetly replied that she desired to train with him and viziers in abjuration magic. And so, for the next year she learned to protect herself with the arcane arts.

When she was seventeen, her second eldest brother, a general in their father’s armies, offered his sister anything he could give her for her birthday. Eshana sweetly replied that she desired to train with his best regiment to learn to wield a sword. And so, for the next year she trained with the vicious Tigers, the army’s most prestigious unit.

When she was eighteen, her father, knowing he would soon have to barter her hand in marriage to another kingdom, offered her anything her heart desired. Eshana sweetly replied that she desired the Tigers.

Her father was reluctant to grant the request. “I would not want to put control of my best unit in the hands of a foreign prince when you marry, my Tendua,” a word meaning ‘panther’ that had been Eshana’s name among family from the time she was small.

The princess shook her head. “I will accept nothing else, father. You love me and I know you will do this for me.”

She was, of course, correct. Her father loved her more than anything, and so he gave her control of the unit. And then Eshana made plans to leave the country.

“Where are you going?” her father cried. “You cannot leave my house. You are my daughter and a royal princess!”

“I am now a commander of men,” Eshana replied firmly. “And I cannot pay my men. So I will hire them out as mercenaries to give them gold and fight among them. Because you have raised the finest, fairest daughter in the world, father. And I will not be caged.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is a story told far and wide. Such things have a life of their own, the truth fading to a mere hint of a suggestion. Eshana doesn’t bother correcting assumptions. No one needs to know that the Tigers were slaves, that she was chased from the country rather than leaving it in a childish desire for honor and glory.
When called upon, she can be the Tendua of the tale, a djinn of spinning blades in a splendidly tailored gold outfit, slit so that her dark skin can be seen along her arms and legs. She conjures shields that protect her from arrows, enchants her skin to withstand fire. And, more often than not, it is the performance that wins her and her men a contract.
But upon taking to the field, she is the Panther she always was, dressed in dark leathers with few adornments, a sturdy sword replacing the one with the painted golden blade and glass rubies in the hilt.
Eshana fights to survive. She fights for revenge against the family that turned against her. And she fights for the kingdom and glory that the princess still living in her heart knows is her birthright.
