No one would ever see the marks. The bruises. They had been so pleasurable at the time. Something she hoped to get to experience again and again with the woman. Learning to love those nips and suckling lips.

It was a good thing she wore all those clothes. She didn’t want to explain. Didn’t want to name names. She wanted to forget. And to some extent, she had.

Everything that came before, the pleasure and the petting and the kisses…it all seemed like a dream. Fading fast.

What she couldn’t shake was what came after, the blonde whore’s spiteful laughter at finding them naked on the beach together, cut off in a wet gurgle. Blood dripping from Cia’s fingers. That dead crimson glow in her eyes.

She wouldn’t think about it. She would work until she passed out from exhaustion and then throw herself into work again. She would put that night firmly in the realm of dreams: ephemeral, hazy, unreal.

She would wear the bee-charm bracelet Lachesis had given her.

She would never speak to Ciara again

Her own bed. Her own house. It was good to be back.

Milli kept repeating that over and over again in her head. Because she couldn't hide forever within the bubble that Tsuu and Ravern's kindness had provided. She had to stand on her own.

Shooting lessons with Syrean and Tia had helped. She was growing more confident with a weapon the more she practiced. She'd even made a wooden target with her sister and sister-in-law the day before so she could keep on practicing without having to buy so many jugs.

Rifles were actually easier to handle, but Syrean had shown her some good techniques with a pistol. How to keep herself steady. Keep breathing. She would practice every day, beat the lessons into her own head. Another way to protect herself.

It was amazing how much better she felt just making plans, moving forward. She would talk to Mordecai, see if he would be willing to show her about wild things, animals and men. And ask Jack if he could help her learn how to fight without her guns. And how to lie. She might not ever get really good at it, but she needed the basics, at least.

For so long she had depended on others to protect her. Association and nearby threats holding the proverbial wolves at bay. Now there was one wolf in particular she wanted -- needed -- to keep safe from and no one else could stand up for her.

So she was upgrading herself. A good word, she decided. A higher version of Millicent Bowyen. One protected not just by who she knew, but by what she could do. And one who would be willing to do it.
